In this beautiful lecture, Sripada Premananda Prabhu reveals details from his various meetings with Srila Bhaktivedanta Vamana Gosvami Maharaja, including how he received sannyasa-vesa (without direct instructions to don the cloth). We have also heard other times how he received the sannyasa-vesa and mantras from his Guru Maharaja. However, he received different instructions and indications from his shiksa-gurus. At one time, he mentioned how he was given the cloth, but told there was no need at this time to accept sannyasa externally, because there were already too many sannyasis in the Gaudiya-Matha. Srila Trivikrama Gosvami Maharaja would occasionally ask him rhetorically, "Can one not achieve the highest destination without becoming a sannyasi? Can one not do bhajana unless he is a sannyasi?"

Srila Gurudeva offered Prabhuji sannyasa on various occasions, including in some of their last meetings. When Srila Gurudeva first started giving sannyasa, some of the Indian sannyasis at first said they would not take if Prabhuji did not first take, since he had come first to the Matha, and had taken care of them like a mother. They later took after Prabhuji encouraged them repeatedly.

It is not easy to understand the pastimes of Guru and Vaisnavas. Sastra describe: vaisnavera kriya mudra vijnane na bujaya.

For any who may challenge this story by their own stubbornness, they would do well to remember that truth does not depend on their opinions. We have the cloth that was given kept safely, and many are there who recall when it was given.
