The 2022 General Elections in Kenya had the lowest voter turnout of all elections conducted since the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya 2010. For instance, while the Independent Electoral and Boundaries commission (IEBC) targeted registering 6million new voters, only 2.5 million voters registered. 

Liz Njambi, a Human Rights Defender, shares her own experience as we unpack voter apathy - What must be done to restore trust in public institutions and systems of democratic governance?

Today is International Women Human Rights Defender's Day and we're honouring a feminist and a fierce WHRD who we so proud to call a friend.. Rachel Mwikali. 

Rachel describes herself as a Pan-African feminist, an unapologetic feminist and trouble maker and the convenor of Coalition of Grassroots Human Rights Defenders Kenya, a coalition of grassroots feminist activists and community organisers.   

We sat down with Rachel to discuss classism in Kenyan feminism.  🎙What are the challenges, cliques, power dynamics, patriarchy princesses and opportunities for greater solidarity as Kenyan feminists. 🎙Going beyond feminism as a middle class struggle. 🎙 How did her #PussyPower movement start?

We're continuing our conversation with Ebby Weyime on sexual health and reproductive rights. We speak about the choices (or lack of choices) most women face when it comes to sex, motherhood and careers. Ebby deconstructs the lie of 'The Superwoman' and whether Kenya women are ready to have the conversation on the punitive cost of motherhood.  

Ebby Weyime is the founder of The Grace Cup, an anti- bacterial, eco-friendly menstrual cup. She is a certified menstrual hygiene trainer and a reproductive health advocate. She works with girls and women training them on reusable period products i.e menstrual cups and cloth pads. She is also a former model and actor who was based in Cape Town- South Africa for 6 years before moving back to Kenya bto found The Grace Cup. She is passionate about our young girls and works to empower them in their choices.
