For weeks, the Netflix movie “Cuties” has been gaslit with false accusations that it promotes pedophilia and sex trafficking. Netflix bears some blame for green-lighting a poster that reeked of hyper-sexualization of minors without offering any context to the plot of the film. The truth, the movie is about how easy adolescent girls can fall prey to being sexualized. It’s also about a young girl battling culture norms vs. an obsession with pop culture. Once again, social conservatives have run amock with virtue signaling, and are loss in the abyss of tribalism. In my opinion, Maïmouna Doucouré wrote and directed a beautiful story that is worthy of its receipt of winning the highest honor at the Sundance Film Festival. I commend Netflix for its bravery to showcase the film on its platform.
