From a young age, Hill had a feeling that his body was different. He struggled with some basic movements and was hospitalized for a few weeks as a young boy after becoming paralyzed when he got the flu. It wasn’t until he was 23 that his parents told him specifically that he had a condition called Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, a neurological condition that affects the muscles in his arms and legs. CMT threatened to alter Jamal’s entire life, including his passion for swimming. But through sheer will, faith, and determination Jamal has not only, over the years, regained his mobility, but he is also at the top of his game as a competitive swimmer. At the age of 24, the Los Angeles native is ranked number one in the U.S. Paralympic 100 Free and number 22 in the world! As a result, he hopes to head to Tokyo as a member of the 2020 U.S. Paralympic Swim Team to bring home the gold. Jamal’s passion for swimming extends well beyond his personal and professional goals for Tokyo 2020 (20ONE). The latest statistics from the World Health Organization show that roughly 360,000 people lost their lives to drowning in 2016. In the U.S., drowning ranks fifth among the causes of unintentional injury death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In an attempt to lower the global drowning rate, Jamal recently began an initiative to teach One Million people to swim through private trainings, sponsors, and a digital swim school platform. This movement is Swim Up Hill.

Toni Armstrong is currently a leadership development consultant for a self-discovered company called Baltimore Leadership. Toni uses low ropes style initiatives to teach modern leadership theories to swim coaches and swimmers alike. She has worked with teams such as Stanford Men's Swimming, NYU Swimming & Diving, Mt. Holyoke Swimming & Diving as well as Johns Hopkins Swimming & Diving. Prior to her leadership development consulting, Toni spent 7 years as an assistant coach at North Baltimore Aquatic Club. The age range for her athletes at NBAC was as young as 6 years old and as old as 14 years old. Toni has also coached D2 college, worked at Outward Bound as well as Stanford University's Leadership Institute.

At the time of this podcast, Paul Stafford was the head coach for the Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics, based at the University of Arizona. He has since left that position. Paul had been with Ford aquatics since 2014. Prior to joining the Ford Aquatics, Coach Stafford spent his time with the Terrapins Swim Team. Paul co-founded the Terrapins Swim Team with his colleague Ray Mitchell in 1989. With nearly 3 decades of swim experience, Paul assisted many athletes to reach their full potential. Stafford has also begun the process of creating a hand and wrist brace to hold a swimmer's hand in the perfect catch position.

At the time of this recording, Kevin Kinel was the senior/high school head coach for the Duneland Swim Club and had been with the club since 1980. He retired in 2019. In the nearly 40 years, he was named the Indiana Swimming's Senior Coach of the Season and/or year three times. Coach Kevin accumulated 51 sectional titles combined, four team state titles for the boys and a state runner-up finish for the girls.

Jeff Allen is the Eastern Zone Sport Development Consultant for USA Swimming. Prior to USA Swimming, Jeff worked for three years as the West Regional Team Specialist Manager for leading swimwear brand arena USA. Allen coached several teams over the years including serving as head coach of ConocoPhillips Splash Club in Bartlesville, OK and Condors Swim Club in New York, NY. He was also active in multiple swimming organizations such as the YMCA of USA Swimming Advisory Committee and the Illinois and Connecticut Swimming Board of Directors.

At the time of this podcast, Sean Baker was the head coach for Oakville Aquatics. Sean is now the head coach for Markham Aquatic Club. Over the past 30 years, Coach Baker has won numerous regional, provincial, and national titles. He has placed many swimmers on National teams to compete on the international stage. Sean has coached swimmers to over 20 Canadian Senior National and Age Group records. He has received countless rewards including nine national team appointments as a coach for Canada. Coach Baker's first coaching job was with the Nanaimo Riptides in 1995.

Jarrod Murphy is the Head Age Group Coach for The Woodlands Swim Team (TWST). Since joining the TWST in 2015 coach Jarrod has coached athletes to National top 10 rankings including 3 #1 rankings, TAGS Champions, TAGS records, GULF LSC records, TWST team records, and numerous sectional qualifiers, Futures qualifiers, and Junior National qualifiers. Coach Jarrod has served the Gulf LSC as part of 2 TPC committees, Head Coach of the Gulf Select Camp in 2018, and has been nominated for ASCA Age Group Coach of The Year in 2017 and 2018.

A native Ohioan, coach Jarrod grew up competing for the Dayton Raiders swim club. A Junior National qualifier and HS All-American he went on to compete for the Kenyon College Lords from 1998-2002 where the Lords continued their dominance at the DIII level winning 4 consecutive national titles He graduated in 2002 with a degree in Psychology concentrated in Neuroscience.

Rob Clayton is the Head Coach for men's swimming and diving at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Clayton came to the Academy in 1997 and worked with women’s coach Casey Converse to coach the Academy’s first woman to qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships at the conclusion of the 1997-98 season. Clayton then took over the reins of the men’s program for the 1998-99 season. He has coached men to 27 individual conference championships and two relay conference championships. 10 of his swimmers have competed in the Olympic Trials, including in 2008 when eight former Falcons participated in the Trials. In addition to his coaching duties, Clayton also instructs cadets in swimming and water survival classes. Clayton is a 1991 graduate of Wyoming where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. While at Wyoming, Clayton was one of the premier swimmers in the Western Athletic Conference, competing at the NCAA Championships in the 200 freestyle, 200 IM and 400 IM. In 1991, he won the 200 and 400 individual medleys at WAC Championships, becoming only the second Cowboy to ever win an IM conference title. His time in the 400 IM set a conference championship record and still stands as the pool record at the University of Hawaii. Following college, Clayton served as an age group coach for the Fort Collins Area Swim Team (FAST) before becoming the men’s assistant coach at Brigham Young University. During his six years in Provo, he was instrumental in building one of the most successful swimming programs in the region.

Alex Carney is the TAGS II Lead Coach for Nitro Swimming. He has been coaching with Nitro since 2012. Currently, he is up for Fitter and Faster's Age Group Coach of the Year award. He has worked with Springfield Aquatics, Missouri State Aquatics, and has spent time with PREP swim lessons and summer league coaching.
