Super Mario Odyssey capped (get it, capped?) off a wild and wacky 2017 for Nintendo in classic fashion. We may not have planned on completing this game so quickly, but here we are. Is this a game we can recommend to fellow non-completionists? Listen to our thoughts and see for yourself!

One of the more unique Switch launch titles, SnipperClips is a true cooperative gem, seeing you take control of a lil polygon with the ability to cut up their partner in almost any shape you can imagine. When you think ‘video games,’ you probably think of Super Mario and his various romps across the mushroom kingdom and beyond. And for good reason; Super Mario games have been in the forefront of the industry for decades. Whether it was leading the charge of a gaming revolution with the ‘Nintendo Entertainment System’ or defining the modern 3D platformer with ‘Super Mario 64,’ the overall-wearing hero is synonymous with trailblazing game design. Nowhere is that more on display than in ‘Super Mario Galaxy.’

Originally released for the Nintendo Wii in 2007, Super Mario Galaxy sees you take to the cosmos in a gravity bending adventure. Not only are you saving Princess Peach from Bowser, the well being of the universe is at stake. ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ takes advantage of its intergalactic setting in magical and mind bending ways. Run, jump, and now spin your way to victory, one galaxy at a time.

In September 2020, Nintendo would release a special, limited time only port of Super Mario Galaxy, along with Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario 64. Dubbed ‘Super Mario 3D All Stars,’ the game was only available for only six months in celebration of Mario’s 35th anniversary. It was (And still remains)  a controversial move by the gaming giant, and the only way to buy the game today is via resellers like eBay and others.

In late 2015, two young developers would take part in a game jam for the PICO-8 virtual console. As is the story with most game jams, the game was simple in concept. Armed with a jump and a dash, the player attempted to climb an arduous and dangerous mountain, one screen at a time. This would be the genesis and starting point for 2018’s pixel perfect platformer Celeste, developed and published by Maddy Makes Games (now extremely ok games).

Celeste sees you take control of Madeline, a young woman who battles the elements, and her own mind, as she attempts to climb the fabled ‘Celeste Mountain.’ In a game where death is only one misjump away, Celeste is a punishing but ever so rewarding game where you learn through your trials and failures. Persistence, though, proves worthy, as the story tackles issues of mental health and self confidence in some really inspiring and touching ways. Showered with accolades and award nominations upon release, Celeste is widely regarded as one of the most successful indie games of the last decade. It’s a game that is truly worth seeing through to the end.

Picture this: A universe spanning adventure platformer where you take to the skies in your airship and visit different worlds to collect a precious collectible. A character with a vast, snappy move-set that can traverse any type of terrain. Themed boss battles at the end of each world.

You are probably picturing everyone’s favorite Koopa crushing hero, Mario, and I don’t blame you. But in this instance, on this day, I am talking about Poi: Explorer’s Edition. Developed, admirably, by two person development team PolyKid and published by Alliance, Poi: Explorer’s Edition sees you take control of one of two orphaned siblings, as they are taken in by a retired explorer to go on their very own adventure. This platformer takes heavy inspiration from Super Mario 64 and Sunshine, with a move set feeling strikingly similar to the mustachioed plumber. You will span a colorful universe, visiting several unique worlds in search of the coveted ‘Explorer medallions’ (This game’s power star). Jump, roll, and somersault your way to adventure with Poi: Explorer’s Edition.
