T is for Trauma
Trauma is something that many of us deny experiencing because we still tend to define it as something that happens to soldiers returning from the front lines, or to someone who has undergone a significant traumatic event (eg: car accident, etc). But trauma is so much more common than we think. Events from our lives can have long lasting effects that can result in trauma and emotional disregulation.
Dr. Lee is joined this week by Carol Briskin, a certified clinical trauma professional, certified board polarity practitioner, and trauma and addiction therapist with over 40 years of experience in the field.
After a recent conversation with Carol about how they both got into trauma work, they discovered the topic of trauma isn’t discussed broadly enough in the healthcare or mental health arenas, let alone in the mainstream. So today, they put trauma under the lens and give us an in depth look at what happens to us physiologically when experiencing or dealing with trauma.
Simply put, trauma is a nervous system event -- an internal response to an external circumstance. When the nervous system becomes overwhelmed, but the resources to deal with the event are missing, the result is trauma.
We are designed to deal with threats in three primitive ways: freeze, fight, flee. These are normal evolutionary responses. When they become problematic is when we don’t know how to release the charge that gets built up and are unable to restore our emotional equilibrium.
Learning how to show up emotionally in safety is critical to prevent us from constantly living in a survival state. Regulating your nervous system and discharging dysregulated emotions is the first step in learning to relax.
Join Dr. Lee and Carol as they walk us through the impact of trauma on our bodies and brains, including an exercise to help us release the emotional activation that comes with it.
