The Year of theLord's Favor

61The Spirit of the LordGodis upon me,because theLordhasanointed meto bring good news to the poor;he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,to proclaim liberty to the captives,andthe opening of the prison to those who are bound;2to proclaim the year of theLord's favor,and the day of vengeance of our God;to comfort all who mourn;3to grant to those who mourn in Zionto give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,the oil of gladness instead of mourning,the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;that they may be called oaks of righteousness,the planting of theLord,that he may be glorified.4They shall build up the ancient ruins;they shall raise up the former devastations;they shall repair the ruined cities,the devastations of many generations.

5Strangers shall stand and tend your flocks;foreigners shall be your plowmen and vinedressers;6but you shall be called the priests of theLord;they shall speak of you as the ministers of our God;you shall eat the wealth of the nations,and in their glory you shall boast.7Instead of your shame there shall be a double portion;instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their lot;therefore in their land they shall possess a double portion;they shall have everlasting joy.

8For I theLordlove justice;I hate robbery and wrong;I will faithfully give them their recompense,and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.9Their offspring shall be known among the nations,and their descendants in the midst of the peoples;all who see them shall acknowledge them,that they are an offspring theLordhas blessed.

10I will greatly rejoice in theLord;my soul shall exult in my God,for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,as a bridegroom decks himselflike a priest with a beautiful headdress,and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.11For as the earth brings forth its sprouts,and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up,so the LordGodwill causerighteousness and praiseto sprout up before all the nations.

Comfort for God's People

40Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.2Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,and cry to herthather warfareis ended,that her iniquity is pardoned,that she has received from theLord's handdouble for all her sins.

3A voice cries:In the wilderness prepare the way of theLord;make straight in the desert a highway for our God.4Every valley shall be lifted up,and every mountain and hill be made low;the uneven ground shall become level,and the rough places a plain.5And the glory of theLordshall be revealed,and all flesh shall see it together,for the mouth of theLordhas spoken.

The Word of God Stands Forever

6A voice says, Cry!And I said,What shall I cry?All flesh is grass,and all its beautyis like the flower of the field.7The grass withers, the flower fadeswhen the breath of theLordblows on it;surely the people are grass.8The grass withers, the flower fades,but the word of our God will stand forever.

The Greatness of God

9Go on up to a high mountain,O Zion,herald of good news;lift up your voice with strength,O Jerusalem, herald of good news;lift it up, fear not;say to the cities of Judah,Behold your God!10Behold, the LordGodcomes with might,and his arm rules for him;behold, his reward is with him,and his recompense before him.11He will tend his flock like a shepherd;he will gather the lambs in his arms;he will carry them in his bosom,and gently lead those that are with young.

64Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down,that the mountains might quake at your presence2as when fire kindles brushwoodand the fire causes water to boilto make your name known to your adversaries,and that the nations might tremble at your presence!3When you did awesome things that we did not look for,you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence.4From of old no one has heardor perceived by the ear,no eye has seen a God besides you,who acts for those who wait for him.5You meet him who joyfully works righteousness,those who remember you in your ways.Behold, you were angry, and we sinned;in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?6We have all become like one who is unclean,and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.We all fade like a leaf,and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.7There is no one who calls upon your name,who rouses himself to take hold of you;for you have hidden your face from us,and have made us melt inthe hand of our iniquities.

8But now, OLord, you are our Father;we are the clay, and you are our potter;we are all the work of your hand.9Be not so terribly angry, OLord,and remember not iniquity forever.Behold, please look, we are all your people.10Your holy cities have become a wilderness;Zion has become a wilderness,Jerusalem a desolation.11Our holy and beautifulhouse,where our fathers praised you,has been burned by fire,and all our pleasant places have become ruins.12Will you restrain yourself at these things, OLord?Will you keep silent, and afflict us so terribly?

And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they willcondemn him to death19anddeliver him over to the Gentilesto be mocked and flogged andcrucified, and he will be raised onthe third day.

A Mother's Request

20Thenthe mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, andkneeling before him she asked him for something.21And he said to her,What do you want?She said to him, Say that these two sons of mineare to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left,in your kingdom.22Jesus answered,You do not know what you are asking. Are you ableto drink the cup that I am to drink?They said to him, We are able.23He said to them,You will drinkmy cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant,but it is for those for whom it has beenprepared by my Father.24And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers.25But Jesus called them to him and said,You know that the rulers of the Gentileslord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.26It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,27and whoever would be first among you must be your slave,28even as the Son of Man came not to be served butto serve, andto give his life as a ransom formany.

20For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.2After agreeing with the laborers for a denariusa day, he sent them into his vineyard.3And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace,4and to them he said, You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.5So they went.Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same.6Andabout the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, Why do you stand here idle all day?7They said to him, Because no one has hired us. He said to them, You go into the vineyard too.8Andwhen evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to hisforeman, Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.9And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius.10Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius.11And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house,12saying, These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day andthe scorching heat.13But he replied to one of them,Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius?14Takewhat belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you.15Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Do Not Be Anxious

22And he said to his disciples,Therefore I tell you,do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on.23For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.24Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them.Of how much more value are you than the birds!25And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to hisspan of life?26If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?27Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin,yet I tell you,even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.28But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you,O you of little faith!29And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, norbe worried.30Forall the nations of the world seek after these things, andyour Father knows that you need them.31Instead,seekhiskingdom,and these things will be added to you.
