Tabula Rasa, B!tches!: A Buffy Rewatch Show episodes

  • What's My Line?: Part 2

We pick up from the last episode with Kendra and Buffy facing off. Buffy calls a truce, and they go and confirm Kendra is indeed a Slayer, called when Buffy died at the hands of the Master. Trapped in a cage from his battle with Kendra, Angel is minutes from death by sunlight when he is saved by Willy - only to be delivered to Spike.

Cordy and Xander are attacked by the Bugman Tarakan and barricade themselves in the basement. The stress of the moment leads to a quick and passionate make-out, and then, confused, they escape.

Meanwhile, Oz and Willow are getting on well but are interrupted by the third Tarakan, disguised as a policewoman, who shoots at Buffy. Oz takes a bullet in the arm, saving Willow.

The Gang then discovers that Spike means to revive Dru with a ritual that will kill Angel. Buffy opts to go directly to the church and intervene rather than taking Kendra’s suggestion and regrouping with Giles first. Doublecrossing Buffy, Willy delivers her to Spike and the Tarakans. Just as Buffy is about to be killed, Kendra and the gang storm in. A massive fight ensues. Spike goes running away with Drusilla, but Buffy hits him with a well-thrown thurible to the back of the head, and an organ comes crashing down on them. Spike and Drusilla are presumed dead.

The next day, Buffy sends Kendra home on a plane - this time, sitting with the rest of the passengers. Just as the episode fades out, we see a restored, vamped-out Drusilla emerge from the wreckage with an injured but still alive Spike!

  • What's My Line?: Part 1

Career Week looms over Sunnydale High, and Buffy is reminded once more that her career is likely to be unpaid, antisocial, and short. Angel suggests the two of them go ice skating to cheer Buffy up. Spike and Drusilla are planning something big, but they need to keep Buffy occupied, so they send for the Order of Taraka, deadly semi-human assassins. The first assassin attacks Buffy and Angel at the ice rink but is stopped by a Buffpowered ice skate to the jugular. The second is a man made of bugs, who is unwittingly let into Buffy's house by Cordy. Angel tries to beat information out of Willy the Snitch - an owner of a local bar that caters to demons - but the presumed third assassin appears and locks Angel in a cage, with the sun rising fast. This third assassin then finds and attacks Buffy, and the episode ends with her telling Buffy, "Me name is Kendra: The Vampire Slayer.”

  • The Dark Age

It’s late at night in the Sunnydale library, and Buffy is driving Giles crazy with her workout beats. Outside, a man is frantically looking for Giles, but as he is banging on the library door, a zombie woman strangles him to death before falling to the ground and melting.

Police question Giles, as the dead man was carrying a paper with Giles’ name and address. When Giles sees the body, he recognizes the man as a friend from his past, twenty years ago.

Buffy becomes worried about Giles when he begins acting strangely, missing his Watcher duties, staying in and drinking alone. She finds Ethan Rayne, who owned the Halloween shop, skulking in the library. Ethan is looking for Giles and references Eyghon - a demon that Giles, Ethan, and other friends experimented with when they were rebellious kids. Eyghon has returned to kill all of Giles’ old gang, and only he and Ethan remain.

After a scuffle in the library, unbeknownst to the Scoobies, Eyghon jumps into Jenny’s body. The possession of Jenny grows stronger, but Willow’s plan saves her. They trick Eyghon into jumping into Angel, who fights him off with his inner demon. Ethan has run off, and although everyone is technically safe, Jenny is shaken and seems to have lost trust in Giles.

  • Lie to Me

The episode opens with Angel saving a kid from Drusilla’s clutches and urging her and Spike to leave town. Unbeknownst to them, Buffy is out patrolling and observes and misconstrues the interaction.

The next day in school, Buffy and the gang learn that Billy "Ford" Fordham, Buffy’s fifth-grade crush, has transferred to Sunnydale High. Xander is, unsurprisingly, jealous, and Angel is as well when he runs into the Scoobies at the Bronze that night. Later, Ford sees Buffy stake a vampire, confessing that he already knew she was the Slayer.

Angel is suspicious about Ford and teams up with Willow and Xander to investigate him. They learn that Ford isn’t actually enrolled at Sunnydale High and that he is part of a cult of vampire wannabes. Ford finds his way to Spike’s hideout and cuts a deal: make Ford a vampire, and Ford will deliver Buffy.

Ford lures Buffy into the cult’s converted bomb shelter and locks everyone in, awaiting the vampires to come and convert them. Buffy learns Ford is doing this because he has cancer, is dying, and that he feels he doesn’t have a choice. Buffy reminds him, “you don’t have a good choice, but you have a choice.”

The vampires break in, and Buffy holds Drusilla hostage, telling Spike to let the humans go. Spike does, and everyone except Ford escapes. The next night, Ford rises as a vampire and is staked by Buffy while she and Giles talk about the complicated nature of life.

  • Halloween

Allie and Nick welcome guest host Colleen to discuss Buffy season 2, episode 6, “Halloween.”

It's Halloween, which - surprisingly - means it’s the quietest night of the year for the undead. The Scoobies would be relaxing, but they’re bullied by Principal Snyder into babysitting the kids of Sunnydale while they trick or treat. The gang buys their costumes at a new place run by a mysterious Englishman called Ethan Rayne. Xander saves money on a soldier's costume, Buffy chooses a noblewoman's costume to impress Angel, while Willow chooses a SUPER scary costume - a ghost. Buffy coaxes her into a more revealing outfit, but she chickens out and wears the ghost sheet over it. Ethan, revealing himself as a worshipper of chaos, casts a spell to turn people into their costumes. Buffy is now ditsy and powerless, Xander is a real soldier, Willow is incorporeal, and everyone else - except Cordelia - is a monster. Spike and his goons take advantage of the chaos. Angel joins the Scoobies, thank goodness. Giles, who we learn has a history with Ethan, brutally beats the spell reversal out of him. This brings everyone back to normal, just in time.

  • Reptile Boy

Buffy is enjoying a rare night off with Willow and Xander, while across town, a young woman is pursued by men in robes. The next day, Giles scolds Buffy for what he believes is her letting her Slayer training fall by the wayside. Cordelia introduces Buffy to two fraternity guys, one of whom sucks, the other who sucks even more, but we find that out later. After an upsetting, angsty run-in with Angel on patrol, Buffy decides to accept Cordelia’s invite to go to a fraternity party, lying to Giles about her plan that night. But, it turns out, the frat boys kidnap girls yearly to sacrifice them to a large demonic snake living in the basement of their frat house. They drug Buffy and Cordy, who wake up chained to the wall beside the snake demon. The rest of the gang finds this out and storms in to rescue the girls, but Buffy, of course, has it handled, cutting the head off of the phallic demon. Giles promises to take it easier on Buffy, and Angel finally asks Buffy out for a cup of coffee.

  • Inca Mummy Girl

It’s foreign exchange student time at Sunnydale High, and Buffy is hosting a male student from South America. Xander isn’t thrilled until it seems Buffy is actually hosting a girl, not a boy. Unbeknownst to the Scoobies, this girl, who takes on the name Ampata, is an ancient Incan mummy sacrificed by her people. She’s brought back to life and must drain the life force of other people in order to remain alive. Xander quickly charms Ampata with his goofiness, and she agrees to go with him to the upcoming World Culture Dance. More bodies are discovered, and Buffy and Giles realize that Ampata is the mummy. Just as Willow is about to become Ampata’s next victim, Xander offers himself in her place. Ampata hesitates just long enough to age quickly and turn to dust. The next day, Xander bemoans his awful luck in love, and Buffy points out that Ampata may have done bad things, but she also had horrible things done to her.

  • School Hard

Principal Snyder has sentenced Buffy, on pain of expulsion, to set up the upcoming Parent/Teacher Night. Meanwhile, two new vampires have moved into Sunnydale - a cheerfully homicidal maniac named Spike and his spacey girlfriend, Drusilla. They tell the Anointed One they’ll ‘take care’ of his Slayer problem. Buffy tries to keep her mom from meeting Principal Snyder at Parent/Teacher Night, but the two do meet, and Principal Snyder apparently does not have nice things to say about Buffy. Suddenly, Spike and his goons burst through a window. Buffy and the Scoobies, aided by Angel and Ms. Calendar, defend the school while the parents and teachers hide. Buffy faces off against Spike, fending him off with help from Joyce. Spike runs away, the school is saved, and Joyce is so impressed with Buffy’s leadership that she doesn’t ground her. The next day, a defeated Spike concedes Buffy will be hard to defeat. He lifts the Anointed One into the morning sunlight, killing him, and takes over as the lead vampire in Sunnydale.

  • Some Assembly Required

Someone is digging up the corpses of women in Sunnydale - but for what purpose? While the gang investigates, Giles adorably struggles with asking out Jenny, and Angel and Buffy deal with their jealousy after Buffy’s sexy dance with Xander last episode. Chris and Eric, two science geeks, are overheard saying Cordelia would be “perfect for us.” It’s revealed Chris and Eric are putting together the perfect woman for Chris’ brother, Daryl, who died and was brought back to life by Chris. They have this Frankenstein’s Bride almost put together and kidnap Cordelia to use her head to finish the job. The gang finds her in time, and as Buffy and Daryl fight, the place is lit on fire. Seeing his quote bride go up in flames, Daryl chooses to be engulfed with it, screaming, “we’ll be together always.” Buffy and Angel resolve their issues after Angel admits he’s jealous of Xander and Buffy says it’s not Xander she’s in love with. Dawn approaches, so Buffy offers to walk Angel home. They leave the graveyard hand in hand.

  • When She Was Bad

After spending the summer with her dad in L.A., Buffy returns to Sunnydale very unsunny. It seems her take-down of The Master and dying and coming back to life are still affecting her. To make matters worse, the Anointed One and his minions have a plan to bring The Master back. Buffy keeps pushing everyone away as she avoids dealing with her trauma. Things come to a head when the Anointed One’s goons kidnap Willow, Cordelia, Giles, and Ms. Calendar for the Master-restoring ritual. Buffy, with the help of Xander and Angel, saves the day and gains some closure by smashing The Master’s bones to dust.

The next day at school, Buffy finds true friends can forgive and forget. The gang is together again.
