In our Police, Fire, Military and Families Facebook group, we had someone share a story that he wasn't proud of; however, it was one where he felt that he needed to decide that the rules didn't apply to him.

He and his wife were drinking at a friend's house after packing an overnight bag and planning on leaving in the morning.

He received a call from his son who told him that he was about to take his own life.

Without thinking, he hopped in his vehicle and sped down the road to get to his son, noticing the red and blue flashing lights that began to follow him.

In the end, his son was okay but he was arrested.

Have you ever heard the fable of Plato's Allegory of the Cave?

The short version is a group of people who lived their entire lives chained inside of a dark cave. Their only form of entertainment and interaction was viewing puppet figures that were reflected on the cave wall from in back of them as a fire burned behind them.

These prisoners made up their own names of the puppet characters and essentially dramatized these puppets because to them, this content that they consumed was their total and complete reality.

Fast forward until one day, one of the prisoners got free of their chains and wondered out of the cave only to be met by a blinding light.

After taking a moment's look out, he immediately went back inside of the cave to tell the others.

The others were so consumed with watching the puppets that they couldn't be bothered to hear the story from the one who escaped…the one who saw the real world.

Did you know that on September 29th, 2022, new laws were set in place in the state of California that would allow non-citizens to become police officers?

Yeah…I didn't either.

In a new world where Defunding the Police has become commonplace, this new law also lessens the educational requirements needed to become a police officer.

Tune in as Coach Ashlie Walton breaks down some of the concerns and questions that we should all be asking ourselves.

SB 960:

• Existing law establishes the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training within the Department of Justice to perform various functions involving the training of peace officers. Existing law requires peace officers in this state to meet specified minimum standards, including, among other requirements, being at least 18 years of age, being of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation, and being either a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship, except as prescribed.
• This bill would provide that those standards shall be interpreted and applied consistent with federal law and regulations, as specified. The bill would remove the provision that requires peace officers to either be a citizen of the United States or be a permanent resident who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship, and would instead require peace officers be legally authorized to work in the United States, and make conforming changes.
• Under existing law, the minimum education requirement for peace officers is high school graduation from a public school or other accredited high school, passing an equivalency test or high school proficiency examination, or attaining a 2-year, 4-year, or advanced degree from an accredited institution. Existing law requires accreditation to be from a state or local government educational agency, a regional accrediting association, an accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education, or an organization holding full membership in specified organizations, including AdvancED.
• This bill would revise the accreditation standards to include an organization holding full membership in Cognia.
• (2) Existing law establishes, within the Transportation Agency, the Department of the California Highway Patrol, under the control of the Commissioner of the California Highway Patrol.
• Existing law, with certain exceptions, prohibits a person who is not a citizen of the United States from being appointed as a member of the California Highway Patrol. This bill would remove that prohibition, and would make conforming changes.
• (3) This bill would incorporate additional changes to Section 1031 of the Government Code proposed by AB 2229 to be operative only if this bill and AB 2229 are enacted and this bill is enacted last.

When you think of physical fitness, do you picture what the inside of a gym looks like?

My friend recently married his bride in the beautiful area of Sri Lanka which has a population of about 22 million people (compare that to our over 350 million in the United States).

This is an area where most people live modest lives in villages. The hard workers have the means to get them what they need but it is not anything comparable to American living standards.

My friend's mother-in-law was surprised when she was told that she didn't have to freeze in her hotel room any longer and that she was allowed to adjust the thermostat in her hotel room.

Imagine my friend's surprise when his mother-in-law also didn't know that she was allowed to use her hotel bedding or what it was like to teach her how to use an escalator at the mall.

While it might sound silly to someone so accustomed to these things, it's a great wakeup call for us to all remember how grateful we are to have the accommodations that we do…

Roy Baumeister wrote a book called Willpower: Rediscovering Our Greatest Strength and he is one of the world's leading experts on the study and science of willpower. He tells us that people who use their willpower the most intelligently are the people who have figured out how temptation plays into their willpower.

Roy explains that the wise among us play offense with their willpower and not defense.
