Over twenty thousand people descended upon Washington, D.C. in 1993 for the first dyke march. A group of activists known as The Lesbian Avengers planned the march out of anger for feeling unacknowledged, disrespected, and discriminated against in the straight and gay communities. The marches continue today in larger cities during pride celebrations. According to the NYC Dyke March, the march is "a protest march, not a parade." On this month's Gag, we welcome Julian R. Harris. Julian is a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW) and therapist in private practice in Washington, D.C. He is also a black man of trans experience. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University at Buffalo, and his Master of Social Work degree from Howard University. He works, and volunteers with diverse and marginalized populations coping with grief, loss, trauma, and discrimination, he also has extensive knowledge of transgender communities especially, the trans masculine community. Dr. Imani Woody is the founding director and CEO of Mary's House for Older Adults, Inc. She has a Ph.D. in Human Services, specializing in non-profit management. Dr. Woody has been an advocate of women, people of color and LGBT/SGL issues for more than 20 years. She is currently working as a diversity and inclusion consultant in the field of health, aging and issues affecting the LGBTQ/SGL and people color communities. Dr. Woody is a member of the National LGBT Elder Housing Initiative, and presented on LGBT housing issues at the White House. Christine Jorgensen (born George William Jorgensen Jr.) was an American transgender woman who was the first person to become widely known in the United States for having sex reassignment surgery. Jorgensen grew up in the Bronx, New York City. Shortly after graduating from high school in 1945, she was drafted into the U.S. Army for World War II. After her service she attended several schools, worked, and around this time heard about sex reassignment surgery.
