Members Reviews:
Romance set against the backdrop of the War of 1812
Jean Lafitte comes to the rescue of Nicollette who is supposed to be marrying someone when she gets home. But she falls in love with Lafitte and even marries him symbolically. The ruthless man she was supposed to marry tracks her down, conveniently after she had a bad fight with her love, and tricks her into returning home under the pretended her father is dying. She makes it home only to discover her father is the picture of perfect health. Still she feels obligated to marry the man her father chose for her out of a sense of honor. Can Jean stop her before it's too late. This was a really well written historical romance novel set in New Orleans area.
Just missed being a great book
I enjoyed the time period and setting. Pirates and Old New Orleans always make for a good story. I'm not a big reader of romance novels, but this one kept me interested due to the settings and the many characters. The actual romance was a bit too close to the "Harlequin-style" romances that were once popular forty years ago. I feel the author could have done much more with the two romantic leads, fleshed them out, and made Nikki much less the passive wilted lily. She had the courage to defy the mores of her day; give her more personality, please! This book could have been a five star book SO EASILY!
4 and  Stars - Old New Orleans and the Pirate Jean Laffite in the time of the War of 1812--a Great Story!
This is a wonderful novel from a winner of the Romantic Time Lifetime Achievement Award.
Set in New Orleans and environs beginning in 1811, this is the story of Nicolette Vernet, a beautiful Creole girl, who falls in love with Jean Laffite, the gentleman pirate. I thought it was very brave of Weyrich to choose a real person for her hero, but she did it well and the story is absorbing.
Nicolette dreamed of a handsome husband and a family of her own, but it seemed fate conspired against her. Her first betrothed was killed in a sword fight and, to avoid scandal, her father sent away to Paris to visit her Aunt Gabrielle. On her way home two years later, her ship is attacked by pirates. She is rescued by Jean Lafitte who assumes she was raped. And thus begins an adventure that takes Nikki on a very different course than sheâd imagined for her life.
Weyrich writes well and the story will keep you turning pages. Itâs obvious she has done much research into the enigmatic figure of the pirate Jean Laffite. Her other characters are richly drawn, too, including Aunt Gabi and Jeanâs two older brothers. I loved the romance that developed between Nikki and Jean and hated the bad guy that her father wanted her to marry.
