A Mother and Carrier of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Shares Her Journey

Elizabeth’s journey with DMD began when her son was diagnosed at the age of five.

In this episode, Elizabeth reflects on the diagnosis of her son, her daughter’s and her own carrier diagnosis, family life, her coping mechanisms and management of the disease. Although her and her family’s lives have been impacted by DMD, her future outlook is positive and inspiring.

As more and more boys and young men with DMD are transitioning into adulthood, there is an increasing emphasis on quality of life and psychosocial management. In this episode, we are joined by Sarah Stoney, licensed social worker from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for a discussion about considerations and strategies for social aspects of care. 

Sarah Stoney, MSW, LSW is an experiences and licensed social worker with a Master degree in Social Work acquired at the West Chester University. Sarah works at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Division of Neurology since 2014 and assists patients and their families navigate the complex medical system, advocates with families in their schools and throughout the community, and provides ongoing support to patients and families in the neuromuscular, leukodystrophy, and multiple sclerosis communities.

Diana Castro, M.D., is a neurologist at Children’s Health℠ who specializes in pediatric neurology and neuromuscular medicine. She is also an assistant professor of pediatrics and neurology and neurotherapeutics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She is the co-director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic in Dallas and is involved in multiple research protocols for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and Duchenne muscular dystrophy in the pediatric population.
