  • 044 Jeffrey Ross - Get The Job Done

Today’s featured guest is Jeffrey Ross.

Jeffrey is a commercial photographer based out of Naperville IL. Together with his wife Catherine they own Ross Creative Works. They combine Jeffrey’s photography and Catherine’s design work to create powerful imagery, marketing, and advertising materials for their clients throughout the country.

We are a design and commercial photography team that creates powerful imagery, marketing, & advertising. It makes sense that a graphic designer from North Dakota and a photographer from Florida would manage to set up shop in the middle ground of the Midwest. Home base is just west of Chicago in Naperville, IL. Catherine believes she really is living down south. And every winter Jeffrey is ready to run away and sell coconuts on the beach somewhere. Fortunately they work well together.

Jeffrey likes vintage records and knows every store that sells vinyl in a 50 mile radius. He has also figured out 5 different ways to sleep on an airplane and is considering writing a travel book about that hard won knowledge.

  • 042 Paul Audia - Do What You Dig

Today’s featured guest is Paul Audia.

Paul Audia is a Chicago based beauty and fashion photographer who also expands his creativity beyond the still image - his video work is equally impressive. Paul has been published in countless magazines and websites. His award winning work proves his mastery with lighting both in studio and on location.

Great photographers are on a constant quest to capture that perfect shot. From locations and lighting to lenses and shot lists, they listen. They plan. They focus. But when it comes time to shoot, instinct takes over.

From art to fashion to portraits and commercial work, Audia possesses a unique vision, bringing technical mastery and genuine spontaneity to every shoot.

Whether capturing models with wild horses in Connemara, Ireland to shooting catalog work on the color-drenched cobblestone streets of Guatemala to hanging off a cliffside balcony in Portugal, he is fearless in pursuit of his vision. He harnesses light, creativity, lines and curves to evoke emotion, tell a story, reveal the truth. He has shot portraits as diverse as Barack Obama to Billy Corgan, Buddy Guy to buttoned-up business men, fashion models to Irish fishermen, and in each, he strives to uncover the essence of the person within.

He is playful, honest, real and spontaneous. He’s a consummate pro—navigating weather, unexpected circumstances, environment and time—all in pursuit of the shot.

A photographer, an artist, an in-the-moment visionary, he knows how to find the signal through the visual noise. He knows how to focus on details, nuances, and sees uses light like none other. He captures moments that aren’t just beautiful, but make you feel.

The moral of the story: photographers are artists, storytellers, magicians, technicians, and friends. When your next project needs to shine or requires that extra boost of creative attention, call or email and let Audia’s passion for the visual arts be the conduit to make your vision shine.

  • 037 Monday Message 004 - pricing your photography
Hey PhotoWorld! - Take & Talk Pics
    Pricing Your Photography

How do we begin with pricing our service as a photographer? Better yet how do we take it to the next level once we have started bringing in clientele?

Listen in to today’s Monday message where I share the financial story of my first wedding photography gig and why it was the right fit for me.

    Remember to factor in:

What is the true value you bring to the table?

How much have you invested in your business (time, money, and education)?

What expectations do you want your clients to have?

What (if anything) sets you apart in these early stages of your photography?

I fully believe that perceived value is a big factor in this industry. However, that same idea is often abused. Being genuine has never hurt in the long run.

For those of you looking to grow take a listen to Episode 003 with Chis and Lauren Also listen between the lines of Episode 027 with Skip Cohen of Skip Cohen University. These two episodes talk business and more specifically they talk money. If you have been following the trends of the Message Monday Episodes you will find they all connect with the ideas that if you put in the time, really push the effort, get to work, and care about your business as if no one else does; you will have growth and success with your photography and your life.

A shout out to those who are pros and make their living with photography. Like me you are not starting and wondering how to price your fist job. However, do you feel your prices reflect what you are capable of in this medium?

I will bet that an overwhelming about of you are working 3X harder than you need too, getting paid 25% less than you should, and wonder why your business (while it is running steady) is not seeing much growth and just barley keeps in place.

Well just like our equipment prices go up and our taxes jump; we need to follow along to be on par. In golf par would be a great day for just about any of us but in life or business par feel stagnant.

I challenge you to take these 3 steps:

    Are you ready Photo World?

    1. wake up 30-60 minutes earlier for the next 30 days
      1. This extra time gives you an opportunity most are unwilling to take. There for you have a dedicated time for concentration and high levels of productivity.
      2. Blog. Blog.
        1. Google doesn’t care about your site over someone else’s. It cares about content.
        2. Blogging is a difficult task to make habit but it can be the repetition of a blog that will replace your marketing completely.
        3. And it is cheap to do so.
        4. Do one thing that scares you 3 times a week.
          1. Make a system out of making a cold call you have been thinking about but feared the rejection from.
          2. Stop in to local business and introduce yourself.
          3. Call an old friend and just say hi.
          4. These simple connections can introduce you to new networks and therefore new possibilities.

Robs thoughts. -- I love the discussion on "the Walmart mentality" where Nick explains, in a unique but brilliant way, that your customers always get what they pay for. Not to be confused by the idea you can charge more to attract easier going clients, but honing in on your ability, seeing where your value stacks up, and working to niche down into the appropriate market.

Nick shared: Totally immerse yourself in your craft. -- What a perfect statement! So simple and easy to take with us #PhotoWorld.

I am a freelance photographer specializing in weddings, portraiture, architecture, and fine art Landscapes.  Travel is one of my passions.  I love to see new things and photograph the world around me.  - Nick
