Taking Hugh for Granted episodes

  • Death to 2021

A new year, but the Hugh Grant content never stops!

Following on from last year’s Death to 2020, Death to 2021 (created by Charlie Brooker, Ben Caudell and Annabel Jones) has some new faces, as well as some old ones, not least Hugh Grant reprising his role as history professor Tennyson Foss. The light Netflix special pokes fun at another rollercoaster year, revisiting all the dread and occasional delight that 2021 had to offer.

  • Red Nose Day Actually – The Christmas Special

It's Chrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiisssssstttttttmmaasssssssssss and the boys slip into their Christmas jumpers for the podcast's annual Christmas special. This year we're doing things a little differently. We're sticking with the Love Actually theme (obviously), but we're looking back at Red Nose Day Actually (Richard Curtis, 2017), the 2017 15-minute sequel produced for charity. Most of our favourite characters return, including Hugh Grant as our sexy and noble prime minister, who's prefers throwing dirty dance moves around No.10 Downing Street rather than illegal parties.

Diggory and Oscar also have a go at a Love Actually quiz, and blimey is it difficult. See how they fare and you can play along yourself at home too, if you reckon your Love Actually knowledge is up to scratch! The quiz starts at the 15:00 mark.

  • Hugh Grant returns to our screens this Christmas in Death to 2021

It's fair to say that 2021 has been a quiet year for Hugh Grant. After a stellar 2020 which saw Hugh star in both The Undoing and The Gentleman, 2021, so far, has been lacking in our favourite actor. But just when you thought we wouldn't be seeing Hugh on our screens this calendar year, the news broke that he's due to reprise his role of Tennyson Foss in Death to 2021. Scheduled to air on Netflix on December 27, Hugh will return alongside a host of household names including Lucy Liu, Tracey Ullman, Samson Kayo, Joe Keery and William Jackson Harper, to give the world an extra, post-Christmas present.

Oscar and Diggory discuss the big news and speculate what writers Charlie Brooker and co. have in store for Tennyson Foss' character in the next instalment of this mockumentary series.

  • The Dawning

In the penultimate film of Hugh's catalogue, Oscar and Diggory review The Dawning (Robert Knight, 1988). They've put in some serious legwork too, by buying two copies of the DVD off eBay. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, Diggory's copy didn't play properly so he's finally admitted that Oscar is the real Hugh Grant scholar.

An idealistic young Nancy Gulliver (played by Rebecca Pidgeon) is surprised when she discovers IRA gunman Angus Barrie (played by Sir Anthony Hopkins) whilst he’s on the run from the government. As they begin to get to know each other better, and Nancy begins to support Angus’ cause, she must keep his whereabouts a secret from everyone, including from her dearest Harry (played by Hugh Grant).

  • Honour, Profit and Pleasure

It's Oscar and Diggory's honour and pleasure to present to you their review of Honour, Profit and Pleasure (Channel 4, 1985) in which they discuss Hugh Grant's first ever movie credit as 'Hugh Grant', his appearance in the film and what he must have made of the outfits they made him wear in the film.

After the success of his London debut, German composer George Frideric Handel (played by Simon Callow) settles in England. However, after the public rejects a string of his operas and a stroke nearly fells him, Handel embarks on a high-risk gamble for his 1742 oratorio "Messiah"...

  • Night Train to Venice

Imagine you woke up one day and realised it was all a dream...

In this our 50th episode of Taking Hugh for Granted, Oscar and Diggory take a look at Night Train to Venice (Carlo U. Quinterio, 1993), discussing Hugh Grant's monobrow, the not-so-horrifying horror elements of the film and whether Hugh was right when he said that this film was the worst he'd ever made...

Scottish Journalist Martin Gimmle (played by Hugh Grant) is travelling on the Orient Express night trip to Venice to drop off his copy of a book on European Neo-Nazism to an unknown publisher. On the journey, Gimmle meets a cast of characters including a performer (played by Tahnee Welch) and her daughter (played by Rachel Rice), who seem to be the only ones who can help Gimmle when the mysterious other-worldly powers of the illusive Stranger (played by Malcolm McDowell) start to take hold...

  • The Big Man (Crossing the Line)

Today, the boys set foot into the ring Tyson Fury-style to go toe-to-toe with The Big Man (David Leland, 1990).

When out of work coal miner Danny Scoular (played by Liam Neeson) shows off his fighting prowess in a pub brawl, his friend Frankie (played by Sir Billy Connolly) puts him forward to compete in an illegal bare knuckle fighting ring to make some cash. Fearing the consequences, Danny’s wife (played by Joanne Whalley) leaves with their children and soon after is spotted with a new man – Gordon, Hugh Grant...

A 15-minute sketch produced as part of the annual charity event Red Nose Day, Hugh Grant, Andie MacDowell, Kristen Scott-Thomas and co. return to our screens to give us the next instalment of fan favourite Four Weddings and a Funeral.
