In addressing the Corinthian church, Paul challenges the church’s response to a situation of incest. Paul’s response shows that taking the gospel seriously involves taking sin seriously. What we do has an effect on others; therefore, the church must respond to this situation. Nonetheless, the ultimate goal is not punishment but restoration. Interestingly, while promoting the importance of holiness within the community, Paul also reminds the church that they have missional responsibilities to those outside the community.
