hello gorgeous people now listen today we're really working very hard on suzuki cello school book two because it's pouring down with rain and what better way to spend a rainy day than practicing our cellos i want to remind you because we're working through a lot of tunes today i want to remind you to rest as often as possible every 20 minutes is the best idea to have a stretch but i realize we can get quite intense so that doesn't really happen definitely every 45 minutes and i'll be doing that today throughout the day and i'll be right reminding everybody about how they should be sitting how they should be stretching and what they should be doing to keep themselves physically healthy as they work through all these wonderful wonderful suzuki um examples obviously not written by suzuki suzuki just used these very famous tunes and he uses them to teach very young children how to play cello and he was um a bit of a bit of a zealot really wanted little children to perform we have to make sure that we're not performing like monkeys that's my one criticism of suzuki the other thing is adults how do you teach an adult with a child designed method well we can use these tools to our advantage but teaching adults really requires something a little bit different so that's what we try to do at telltale kids make something um make a program of learning that is more suited to a wider a wider student a more developed student if you like that's not to say i can't teach adults i love teaching adults um as much as i love children so suzuki uh cello book two the bouree by gf handel i'm going to play the slow version for you um this is it looks innocuous it's actually really quite difficult to um to get right it throws some curveballs in there so but we're talking we'll be talking about that later let's have a listen

do

so

hmm

so

so

okay now you by listening you're not going to be able to hear the curveballs that are um really going to throw us we're using second position again we're moving up to an e with our fourth finger it's very tricky so we're going to be working on that today in the workshop and the contrast was quite interesting wasn't it really quiet and then getting really loud that sort of build up with these rising notes very it's quite exciting almost um i mean it plods a bit but let's play it at half speed that was um quartus uh oh no that was half speed sorry let's play it at uh three quarter speed and it it it moves a little bit um it's a bit more sprite it's a bit more interesting i think uh let's have a listen so

so

hey

so

so uh

so okay so that's getting a bit more um a bit more interesting isn't it um now i do i should point out that really you need to have the paper music in front of you i'd prefer that if you could buy the book please um you can buy them second hand on ebay and i mean they're running about eight or nine pounds new and i realize that's actually quite a lot of money for a lot of people we don't all have money um so ebay is a really good option you can probably get them for half that the cd you should get the cd or listen you can hear i mean if you go on to youtube you'll be able to hear lots of performers doing this at the full speed and i really recommend you listen but the trick with this listening at full speed thing is listen at full speed and choose your five favorite performances and really get to know it but then while you're learning a piece don't listen at full speed anymore or don't listen to the other performers anymore now you need to trust in yourself and your interpretation so it becomes important really to um to pre use some tools definitely use the metronome use the backing tracks i'm going to be putting up all sorts of backing tracks that going to help us but really to make...

Fifty Famous Stories Retold (Baldwin) 4 King William the Conquerers Sons Free Children's Book.
story 4 of 50 famous stories retold by james baldwin read for librivox.org by laura caldwell the sons of william the conqueror there was once a great king of england who was called william the conqueror and he had three sons one day king william seemed to be thinking of something that made him feel very sad and the wise men who were about him asked him what was the matter i am thinking he said of what my sons may do after i am dead for unless they are wise and strong they cannot keep the kingdom which i have won for them indeed i am at a loss to know which one of the three ought to be king when i am gone o king said the wise men if we only knew what things your sons admire the most we might be able to tell what kind of men they will be perhaps by asking each of them a few questions we can find out which one of them will be best fitted to rule your palace the plan is well worth trying at least said the king have the boys come before you and then ask them what you please the wise men talked with one another for a little while and then agreed that the young princes should be brought in one at a time and that the same questions should be put to each the first who came into the room was robert he was a tall willful ad and was nicknamed shortstocking fair sir said one of the men answer me this question if instead of being a boy it had pleased god that you should be a bird what kind of bird would you rather be a hulk answered robert i would rather be a hulk for no other bird reminds one so much of a bold and gallant knight the next who came in was young william his father's namesake and pet his face was jolly and round and because he had red hair he was nicknamed rufus or the red fair sir said the wise man answer me this question if instead of being a boy it had pleased god that you should be a bird what kind of a bird would you rather be an eagle answered william i would rather be an eagle because it is strong and brave it is feared by all other birds and is therefore the king of them all lastly came the youngest brother henry with quiet steps and a sober thoughtful look he had been taught to read and write and for that reason he was nicknamed beau clerk or the handsome scholar fair sir said the wise man answer me this question if instead of being a boy it have pleased god that you should be a bird what kind of a bird would you rather be a starling said henry i would rather be a starling because it is good mannered and kind and a joy to everyone who sees it and it never tries to rob or abuse its neighbor then the wise men talked with one another for a little while and when they had agreed among themselves they spoke to the king we find said they that your eldest son robert will be bold and gallant he will do some great deeds and make a name for himself but in the end he will be overcome by his foes and will die in prison the second son william will be as brave and strong as the eagle but he will be feared and hated for his cruel deeds he will lead a wicked life and will die a shameful death the youngest son henry will be wise and prudent and peaceful he will go to war only when he is forced to do so by his enemies he will be loved at home and respected abroad and he will die in peace after having gained great possessions years passed away and the three boys had grown up to be men king william lay upon his deathbed and again he thought of what would become of his sons when he was gone then he remembered what the wise men had told him and so he declared that robert should have the lands which he held in france that william should be the king of england and that henry should have no land at all but only a chest of gold so it happened in the end very much as the wise men had foretold robert the short stocking was bold and reckless like the hulk which he so much admired he lost all the lands that his father had left him and was at...

section 7 of the emerald storybook this is the librivox recording all librivox recordings are in the public domain for more information or to volunteer please visit librivox.org read by kim lamb the emerald storybook section 7 briar rose written by kate douglas wigan and nora archibald smith a long time ago there lived a king and a queen who said every day if only we had a child but for a long time they had none it fell out once as the queen was bathing that a frog crept out of the water onto the land and said to her your wish shall be fulfilled before a year has passed you shall bring a daughter into the world the frog's words came true the queen had a little girl who was so beautiful that the king could not contain himself for joy and prepared a great feast he invited not only his relations friends and acquaintances but the fairies in order that they might be favorably and kindly disposed toward the child there were 13 of them in the kingdom but as the king had only 12 golden plates for them to eat off one of the fairies had to stay home the feast was held with all splendor and when it came to an end the fairies all presented the child with magic gifts one gave her virtue another beauty a third riches and so on with everything in the world she could wish for when 11 of the fairies had said their say the 13th suddenly appeared she wanted to revenge herself for not having been invited without greeting anyone or even glancing at the company she called out in a loud voice the princess shall prick herself with a dis staff in her 15th year and shall fall dead and without another word she turned and left the hall everyone was terror stricken but the 12th fairy whose wish was still unspoken stepped forward she could not cancel the curse but could only soften it so she said it shall not be death but a deep sleep lasting a hundred years into which your daughter shall fall the king was so anxious to guard his dear child from this misfortune that he sent out a command that all the disstaffs in the whole kingdom should be burned all the promises of the fairies came true the princess grew up so beautiful modest kind and clever that everyone who saw her could not but love her now it happened that on the very day when she was 15 years old the king and queen were away from home and the princess was left alone in the castle she wandered about over the whole place looking at rooms and halls as she pleased and at last she came to an old tower she ascended a narrow winding staircase and reached a little door a rusty key was sticking in the lock and when she turned it the door flew open in a little room sat an old woman with a spindle busily spinning her flax good day granny said the princess what are you doing i'm spinning said the old woman and nodded her head what is this thing that worlds round so merrily asked the princess and she took the spindle and tried to spin too but she had scarcely touched it before the curse was fulfilled and she pricked her finger with the spindle the instant she felt the prick she fell upon the bed which was standing near and lay still in a deep sleep which spread over the whole castle the king and queen who had just come home and had stepped into the hall went to sleep and all their courtiers with them the horses went to sleep in the stable the dogs in the yard the doves on the roof the flies on the wall yes even the fire flickering on the hearth grew still and went to sleep and the roast meat stopped crackling and the cook who was pulling the scullion's hair because he had made some mistake let him go and went to sleep and the wind dropped and on the trees in the front of the castle not a leaf stirred but round the castle a hedge of briar roses began to grow up every year it grew higher till at last it surrounded the whole castle so that nothing could be seen of it not even the flags of the roof but there was a...
