chapter two of dave dashaway the young aviator by roy rockwood this librivox recording is in the public domain chapter two from the clouds what happened shouted ned towner and dismay in confusion dobbin ran away that's all replied dave quickly why asked ned writing himself and looking around him in a puzzled way something struck him dave made the declaration as he dismounted cautiously from the wagon dobbin lay on his side as if perfectly satisfied with the rest in the soft dirt one wheel of the wagon was splintered to pieces and the wagon box had caved in on one side hold his head till i slipped the traces ordered dave they got dobbed into his feet and managed to pull the wagon up the slight slant whistle ned a hair's a pretty bad wreck yes answered dave soberly i don't know what mr warner will say about it let him say flared out ned the old thing was ready for the junk pile long ago well that won't help much said dave as he spoke dave went over to a stretch of broken fence and dragged a long rail up to the wagon the sea strapped to the hub of the broken wheel i guess the wagon will drag home he observed as he hitched up dobbin anew but we will have to walk say broken ned suddenly you think something hit the horse and started him up i'm sure of that declared dave well then i'll bet it's one of those bulgers see we're right at the end of their lot you know they pelted you once before i know that admitted dave but i don't see or hear anything of them just now oh they'd lay an ambush and that brush yonder all night to play a trick on either of us insisted ned the bulges were a family crowd very numerous and troublesome they had often pestered dave in the past and aroused by the suggestion of his comrade dave walked back the road a dozen feet or so peering sharply into the straggly brush lining it what is it dave inquired ned as his friend uttered a quick cry he noticed that dave had come to a short stop and was stooping over in the road my foot kicked something explained dave groping about why i wonder what this is what put in ned curiously it's a bundle of some kind why yes added ned peering sharply at the object in dave's hand it looks like a rolled up sweater someone must have dropped it from a wagon said dave there's something else here than a sweater though let's have a look at it suggested ned early hold on said dave as his comrade reached out to unroll the watered-up bundle it's too dark to make out anything plain the moon had not yet come up and on that tree-lined road it was pretty dark dave moved up to the wagon under the front seat was an old lantern and he secured this and lighted it why i should say there's something else besides a sweater exclaimed ned excitedly as dave unrolled the garment on the seat cushion yes there's a pocketbook said dave open it let's see what's in it suggested ned a watch spoke dave and some money why this is a big fine dave wonder who lost it and look there's a medal a gold medal dave took this up and inspected it closely his fingers trembled with excitement as he did so for the pretty bobble suggested the theme nearest and dearest to his heart the main plate of the metal was chased with the outline of an airship pendant from this by two tiny gold chains was a little strip of metal and on this was inscribed the words presented to robert a king by the c.a.a first endurance prize why i know where this came from cried dave suddenly do you yes where it fell out of the airship that just went over us it was this bundle that hit the horse and made him run away why why stammered ned in great excitement do you think so i'm sure of it that name there too king i read about him being down at the meet at fairfield in the paper yesterday and a a means central aero association is there much money dave question ned about fifty dollars well what are you going to do with it return it to its owner of course but...

recording by annalisa vodka chapter 1 mr sudbury in his counting house mr john sudbury was a successful london merchant he was also a fat little man moreover he was a sturdy little man wore spectacles and had a smooth bald head over which at the time we introduced him to the reader 50 summers had passed with their corresponding autumns winters and springs the passage of so many seasons over him appeared to have exercised a polishing influence on the merchant for mr sudbury's cranium shown like a billiard ball in temperament mr sudbury was sanguine and full of energy he could scarcely have been a successful merchant without these qualities he was also extremely violent now it is necessary here to guard the reader from falling into a mistake in reference to mr sudbury's character we have said that he was violent but it must not be supposed that he was passionate by no means he was the most amiable and sweet-tempered of men his violence was owing to physical rather than mental causes he was hasty in his volitions impulsive in his actions madly reckless in his personal movements his moral and physical being was capable of only two conditions deep repose or wild activity at his desk mr sudbury was want to sit motionless like a statue with his face buried in his hands and his thoughts busy when these thoughts culminated he would start as if he had received an electric shock seize a pen and with purse lips and frowning brows send it careering over the paper with harrowing rapidity squeaking and chirping the pen not the man like a small bird with a bad cold mr sudbury used quills he was a tremendous writer he could have reported the debates of the house in longhand the merchant's portrait is not yet finished he was a peculiar man and men of this sort cannot be sketched off in a few lines had he not been a peculiar man it would not have been worthwhile to drag him thus prominently into notice among other peculiarities in mr sudbury's character he was afflicted with a chronic tendency to dab his pen into the ink bottle and split it to the feather or double up its point so as to render it unserviceable this infirmity coupled with an uncommon capacity for upsetting ink bottles had induced him to hire a small clerk whose principal duties were to mend pens wipe up ink and generally to attend to the removal of debris when mr sudbury slept he did it profoundly when he awoke he did it with a start and a stare as if amazed at having caught himself in the very act of indulging in such weakness when he washed he puffed and gasped and rubbed and made such a noise that one might have supposed a walrus was engaged in its abolutions how the skin of his head face and neck stood the toweling it received is incomprehensible when he walked he went like an express train when he sauntered he relapsed into the slowest possible snail's pace but he did not graduate the changes from one to the other when he sat down he did so with a crash the number of chairs which mr sudbury broke in the course of his life would have filled a goodly sized concert room and the number of teacups which he had swept off tables with the tails of his coat might we believe have set up a moderately ambitious man in the china trade there was...
