Add a fox detective, some innocent ducks, and a small boy hiding a cracked fishing rod, and this could get messy.

What happens when the trickiest fox on Moberly Lake finally tells the truth, and nobody believes him? A polite stranger strolls into the Hollow, and by sundown Freddy has lost his cart, his goods, and his voice, hurt and alone on the far road. Friends hurry past with perfectly good, perfectly wrong reasons. But one traveler's horse knows a detour, and one act of kindness is about to change everything.

What happens when the fastest way up a mountain keeps landing you right back at the bottom? On the one day of summer you can see the whole Hollow from the peak, Bob is determined to reach the top. But a sly fox is selling shortcuts at every hard part, and each one comes with a catch. Can Bob learn that the only way past the hard part is through it?

And it is only his second biggest mistake of the day, because somewhere in the Bluewater Aquarium a very clever octopus is on the loose, and she can open anything with a lid. Marty's tiny notebook holds the answer, if anyone will sit still long enough to hear the whole thing.

How does a bear end up locked in the fanciest enclosure in the whole zoo, eating another bear's salmon? Bob loves being famous for exactly ten minutes — right up until feeding time, when the tapping, pointing, and placard-reading begin. Meanwhile, a mysterious crimson-tailed creature is charging five acorns a peek, and his imported mist machine is about to betray him spectacularly.
