  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Richard Henry - Season 2 Episode 12

What the what? Heads are NOT ready for this one. Someone may need to reup the Hollerboard to make sure this one gets maximum penetration into the internets and all the real heads can know the deal. Stand up one time for my special guest Richard Henry. Richard has been a mainstay on the Austin scene for many years and has held many scenes on his back in a real way. Never afraid to take a chance or help a friend, Richard Henry is one of those dudes who will always be there, doing things. From back in them days bringing them club DJ's to the ATX to working within the indie rap community to doing many nights with my brother Mr. Cree (may he rest in peace) everything Richard does is pure and from the heart.

We met many years ago when companies like Scion and Red Bull were doing cool shows in Houston and Austin and I would hold down Houston and he would hold down Austin. We talk about all that shit and also about the time we brought NOLA bounce music pioneer Ice Mike to Austin and no one cared and then months or so later bounce became like the biggest thing out here, well Big Freedia at least. Which is cool of course. We had many things go down over the years and now you too can listen in and reminisce with us. Hollerboard stand up, like for real, bring it back. Fuck Twitter. Anywayyyyyzzzzz as always tell a friend to tell a friend to tune into the real talk revolution that is, Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala.

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Grimy Styles - Season 2 Episode 11

Man this week I got to sit down with Martin and Matt of one of my favorite bands, Grimy Styles to discuss a bit of their history and to get hyped up for their new album Late Pioneers of Psych Dub - out later this month.

The boys are back and in their truest form. On this episode we discuss the bands history and how guitarist Matt Beebe's work in the studios of Jamaica with the sons of Joe Gibbs on rhythm's that were voiced by artists like Cocoa T, Lutan Fyah, I-Wayne, Capleton, Luciano, Junior Reed and more led to the formation of the band upon his return.

I used to go see Grimy Styles play any chance that I got, and as discussed in this episode I considered them a secret weapon of sorts when I would book shows that crossed genres. These guys would blow peoples minds. How four dudes from Central Texas created some of the most interesting and forward thinking dub music of the mid-2000's and then some is beyond comprehension. Have a listen and learn just how it all came together. And get excited for the new record (hopefully) dropping on wax on June 24th at the Mohawk right here in Austin.

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: El Dusty - Season 2 Episode 10

With @eldusty in front of @producegoods

Maaaaaaaaaan this one was a long time in the making! I have been wanting to sit down with the man El Dusty for a while now, as to me he is one of the most interesting musical artists in Texas, and beyond. The sounds he creates are next level and you never know what you will hear next. AND he is from Corpus Christi, Texas and I always have an interest in artists who really make their way in this world coming from smaller markets. Not that Corpus is short on musical history, it runs deep out there, but I think you know what I am saying.

Every time I am in Corpus I feel like I am at home, El Dusty shows everyone so much love and has their cool ass little downtown on lock. I have a feeling that Corpus Christi could be a boom town again if people see how dope it really is. I mean, @Whataburger comes from there, so it has to have something going for it. Naw but seriously there is a lot of potential in that city and El Dusty is out there making big things happen. He told me some things that even I didn't know about, like when he toured as the DJ for @babybash back when "Suga Suga" was #1 around the world. He also had a rap rock band. So much knowledge being dropped on this one, it's silly.

Check out his latest project with some dope Texas MC's called Sombrero Galaxy on all platforms and go head on and dig into this mans catalog ASAP! Cumbia City is a legendary album, etc. Once again thank you for listening and tell a friend to tell a friend about TALK SO REAL THE MOVEMENT!

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Coka Trevino - Season 2 Episode 9

Continuing on with my podcast series in which I sit down and talk with my friends who do dope things, on this episode I get to sit down with one of the dopest, Coka Trevino! I have known Coka for some years through the music scene here in Austin, we both tend to like good musics and such, and I have watched her ascent in the Austin art community from the moment we met.

She is a super trooper in this city, state and world, bringing people together and showcasing artists who she finds to be amazing, and helping to give them the platforms that they need and deserve in a city that hasn't always embraced everyone equally - though through the work of many it is getting much better now. Seeing Austin open up and diversify (slowly but surely) is a beautiful thing and I am so thankful for organizations like The Projecto and Big Medium (and DAWA, Epistrophy Arts, HAAM y mas) for all of the work that they put in.

On this episode we talk with Coka about moving to Austin from Monterrey, Mexico and her history in both cities, the Austin Studio Tour, life in Texas and how good it can be despite it also being quite fxxked, all sorts of things that two friends might talk about. That's what we are doing here with Talk So Real. Please like, subscribe, whatever you do on the internet and/or your phone. Also, as always, please tell a friend to tell a friend about Talk So Real...

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Serg - Season 2 Episode 8

Oh man this is a very special episode and has been literally a couple years in the making. If you know anything about my history, you know that Serg taught me everything that I know about the internet. He had a blog before me and did a podcast before I really understood what a podcast was. The man has always been ahead of his time and is one of my main dudes in this world. On this episode we get into some really real talk, that may or may not get us cancelled. Listen, if you haven't cancelled Serg yet, don't do it on account of this. It's just a couple dudes talking about things. We meant to do this in February of 2020 but didn't get around to it. Serg was my last house guest before Covid shut us all down. Back then it was just known as Coronavirus, and we were laughing it off watching reggaeton videos that we should have taken more seriously (I wish I remembered the name of the reggaeton coronavirus song that predicted EVERYTHING, but I don't).

Here you will finally get the definitive review and analysis of the new Kendrick Lamar album, #KendrickLamar and you will also hear his thoughts on the new Black Star. #Blackstar #Madlib - Anyway, we felt as though you haven't heard or read enough about these and that it was time to get real about some real subjects such as these highly discussed matters.

If you are looking for deft analysis of the times we live in, you are finally in the right place. You have found us. Please let us know what you think.

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: DJ Protege - Season 2 Episode 7

Man! This weeks episode is fire. I had the honor and the pleasure of chopping it up with a dude who has been deep behind the scenes in Austin and Texas hip hop and more. DJ Protege has been rocking crowds and producing records for a good while now. On this episode we talk about his early days as a DJ and a producer, recording and producing artists like Trae tha Truth, Z-Ro and ESG in his studio in South Austin as well as Austin legends like Dok Holiday and Set 4 Life, Mike & Ike and way more. We talk about the days of DJ Nick Nack's company Gigacrate and his collaborations with so many dope DJ's and artists. And we can't forget about the legendary DJ mixers he would help throw at SXSW and CMJ. The mans resume is endless! Nowadays he is a part owner of SLAB Barbecue in Austin and they have grown to five locations and is a must try if you are ever out here in our city.

The story and the talk is real. Settle in for another edition of Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala and tell a friend to tell a friend to tune in! Also like, subscribe, share, all that stuff.

    Love, matt

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Cha'keeta B - Season 2 Episode 6

This week I got to sit down with my good friend, and one of my favorite MC's from Austin, TX (or anywhere) Cha'keeta B! On the show we discuss why she calls herself a Femcee when she raps harder than many of the dudes out there, the Austin hip-hop community, the pandemic, all sorts of shit that you may or may not expect. This was a fun one. We debut her new single "The Comeback" which you can find on all platforms now, I suggest starting with watching the video on YouTube.

I am always so happy to talk with my friends. Who will be next?

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Lance Walker - Season 2 Episode 4

Got a chance to sit down with my man Lance Scott Walker for this episode. Lance and I go way back in the scene in Houston but really connected when he and Peter Beste started working on the Houston Rap book and what would later become two editions of Houston Rap Tapes. I love Lance's style because he lets his subjects talk and tell the story themselves. Telling the story of Houston rap is no mean feat, there are so many versions and such, and telling the story of DJ Screw is one hell of a challenge. The man Lance took that challenge and is delivering what is about to be the definitive story of DJ Screw.

Tune in to this episode to hear all about his journey writing both books and listen as we go back even further to the days of the Axiom and such. It really goes down!

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Bavu Blakes - Season 2 Episode 3

This one has been a long time coming, it's about time I have a real talk with one of my best friends in this whole musical journey, Bavu Blakes.

His Twitter bio says it best: "Scholar Emcee deliberately walking through the intersection of Hip Hop, education, and spirituality; co-author of award-winning picture book El's Mirror."

Bavu Blakes is one of the best MC's I've ever known, and we have been through the ringer together. Had so many great times. I have had the honor and the pleasure of watching this man transition from freestyle king, to releasing dope albums to becoming a teacher and climbing the ranks in the world of Texas education, (which is very IMPORTANT, the man is needed) and most recently releasing a children's book with his son Ellison. My good friend deserves all of the accolades, but on this episode of Talk So Real, we really just talk, and reminisce about all sorts of things, like the time we had a meeting with Rawkus Records, and also the time we had a meeting with Music World. And it just goes from there.
