Högni Egilsson is one of the most recognisable faces and voices in Icelandic music. A member of the legendary electronic collective Gus Gus since 2011, he’s also carved out a career with the bands Hjaltalín and Gluteus Maximus.

Högni mastered the violin, guitar and piano in his teens alongside a stint in his high-school choir before studying composition at the Iceland Academy of the Arts.

He has composed music for the Royal Shakespeare Company and Icelandic National Theatre and this year releases his first solo album on the Erased Tapes label, titled Two Trains.

It’s not surprising that someone of his physique and height would also play sports too but Högni's a fan of an unlikely pastime for someone from Iceland: basketball.

We met him on a rainy day at this year’s End of the Road festival to find out why he thinks it’s the most beautiful of all games.

Eva Hendricks is the effervescent frontwoman of Brooklyn power pop band Charly Bliss. Made up of four friends who all went to school together, the band formed in 2014 and also includes Eva’s brother Sam.

Earlier year they released their first album Guppy, which the AV Club called an “instant classic’. They also published a companion comic book which featured contributors like illustrator Tuesday Bassen, comic artist Michael Deforge, and Sadie from Speedy Ortiz and Sad13 each interpreting a different track.

Comics and animation are a big part of Charly Bliss. Guitarist Spencer was the voice of Dash in the massive 2004 movie The Incredibles and Eva is obsessed with comics which is what we’re talking about with her on this podcast.

Cameron Ralston is the house bassist and a producer for Spacebomb, a collective of musicians based in Richmond, Virginia, who set up a record label and production company based around a house band. They followed a model established by the likes of Stax or Motown, with a signature style inspired by a love of great American soul music. 

As The Guardian put it, "they make albums that sound like a million dollars" - and this and this October they assemble in London for a one off show that will include guest collaborations with the likes of Natalie Prass, Slow Club, The Waterboys' Mike Scott, Foxygen and Charlie Fink from Noah and the Whale.

Ahead of that show we met Spacebomb bassist Cameron Ralston to talk about something he likes to do when he's not in the studio or on the road: gardening.
