I am a passionate technologist as well as a parent. Our kids are growing up in a world ubiquitous with technology. Some of it good, some of it distracting, and some that is outright parasitic. Trying to control the technologies our kids get exposed to is a daunting task. I’m sharing some of my successes with a few failures along the way. You won’t be perfect, but you are not powerless.

Principles for Parenting and Tech

·         Modeling – Use tech how you want your kids to use it. Practice what you preach.

·         Friction – Make it harder to do things that you don’t want you kids to do.

·         Limits – You set them and enforce them. Kids will test them

·         Precedents – Once you make a choice, it is easier to stay consistent with that choice

·         Single purpose tech over multi-purpose tech

·         Pay over “free”

·         Know your kids and what is right for your situation

Skilling – training a worker to do a specific task

Skilling is work-oriented, discrete, and measurable.

Skilling is necessary but not sufficient. Skilling isn’t as durable as general-purpose learning: critical-thinking, leadership, and empathy.

A kind learning environment builds skill by practicing the activity alone.

A wicked learning environment has unclear or incomplete rules, there may or may not be patterns, feedback is delayed, inaccurate, or both.

If your learning journey is only skilling-based, you are missing the breadth that will apply across many work domains and enrich your humanity.

The Agents Deep Dive training covers more advanced prompting, custom search / RAG, and Adaptive Cards. The training provides a bridge to move from no-code fundamentals into more advanced AI capabilities.

Uncertainty and insecurity are the rule in tech’s current labor market. We will explore some helpful and not so helpful ways that we can manage this stress.

We were told AI and then AI Agents would be drop-in replacements for human workers. We aren’t there yet. Thoughtlessly swapping people for generic AI solutions will, at best, result in “so-so automation”. We’ll take a look at what pre-requisites and investments are necessary to scope and deploy autonomous workflows that deliver real value.
