  • Talking Saints - Iranaeus
“The glory of God is man fully alive.”

Today, on the feast of this Doctor of Unity, hosts Laurie and Pete reflect on the life and teachings of Saint Iranaeus, a 2nd century Bishop and defender of the faith.  The two trace his connection to Saint John the Apostle, and discuss his response to the rampant heresy in his time.

Saint Iranaeus, Patron of those working for Christian unity, pray for us!

  • Jersey at the Catholic Media Conference
We were on the road recently and pulled together an impromptu podcast recording with our Jersey cousins while attending the Catholic Media Associations’ annual conference in Baltimore. Joining Jen and Mike on this episode are:
    - Maria Margiotta, Director of Communications, Archdiocese of Newark
    - Gerry Wutkowski, Assistant Director of Communications & Public Relations, Diocese of Metuchen
    - Mary Kate Polanin, Digital Content Editor at Busted Halo
This is a very funny episode that pulls back the curtain on what it’s like to be a professional Catholic communicator and why organizations like the Catholic Media Association are so important to people serving the Church and the mission of Jesus. #CMCBaltimore

  • Ukrainian Refugee to Catholic Charities Caseworker
In the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the United States became home to many refugees from the Eastern European country. On today’s show, we speak with Alexander Polokh, who brought his family to the U.S. shortly after the invasion, and in just a year, knowing zero English, has become nearly fluent and a caseworker for Catholic Charities of South Jersey. Along with his colleague and boss, Jose Sanchez, the two tell Alex’s story and shine a light on his example of a refugee supporting his new country and community.

  • Play Like A Champion
Extracurricular activities like sports, theater, and clubs are essential part of the Catholic school experience. These teams and clubs help build students into good leaders, employees, team members and faithful Catholics. This is especially true when the school has the right program to build these future leaders.

This week, host Marianela Nunez and co-host Mike Bress explore this topic with two local administrators who have implemented such a program at their school. Sr. Marianne McCann, former principal at Paul VI High School and current Director of Leadership Formation for the Office of Catholic Education and Donna Camardo, recently retired math teacher and girls’ basketball coach at Paul VI High School, join the show to talk about the “Play Like a Champion” program out of the University of Notre Dame. Along with sharing the genesis of the program and some success stories, the group discusses high school sports in general, the need to not only work with the players, coaches but also the parents, and how the program can be implemented on the elementary school level.

  • Eucharistic Revival Parish Phase Begins
On Corpus Christi Sunday, June 11, the Parish Phase of the National Eucharistic Revival will begin. After a year of diocesan-wide events, it’s now time for the parishes to facilitate the message of the revival for the faithful throughout this next year. To give us an idea of what parishes are doing, we brought Donna Ottaviano-Britt, Diocese of Camden Secretary for Pastoral Outreach; Father Vincent Guest, Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Camden; and Deacon Bob Dooley from Saint Brendan the Navigator Parish in Avalon & Stone Harbor.

  • Family and Christian Fellowship through Softball
One of the keys to any thriving Catholic church or community is fellowship, which can take a myriad of forms. During spring in South Jersey, it takes the form of a diocesan co-ed softball league. The decade old league currently boasts teams from 8 parishes in the region (and is always open to adding more), it brings together young and old alike, oftentimes from within families. Today Kari and Mike sit down with family members from two teams, Saint Charles’ Shaun Walsh, Sr. and Shaun Walsh, Jr., and Our Lady of Peace’s Roger McCurdy II and Roger McCurdy III, and, heaven help us, Kari’s husband Phil Janisse! A league like this is a lot more than playing softball, it’s about joyfully bringing people together in the name of Christ.

  • Between Bells with Trish Escarrilla & Jeff Bruckner
We have another podcast crossover this week, but Mike won’t be bristling about this one. Joining us today is the host of Camden Catholic High School’s “Between Bells” podcast, junior Trish Escarrilla, and her teacher adviser, Mr. Jeff Bruckner. We have a great conversation about the genesis of the podcast that is focused on “the people that make up the school community and what they’re truly like between one day’s dismissal bell and the next day’s homeroom bell,” Trish’s delightful & infectious personality, the many creative digital opportunities the school and Mr. Bruckner provide for the students, and then we finish with a truly epic description of how important a lifetime of Catholic schooling has been to Trish.
