G.I.JOE: RELOADED #7-9 - Devil's Due (2004)

In 2004 , while Brandon Jerwa was writing GI Joe A Real American Helo, there was another Ultimate style continuity launched in the pages of G.I. Joe: Reloaded

The aim was to bring G.I.Joe story back to its beginnings in a new accessible and modern continuity. 14 Issues with two specials were first published in 2004 by Devil's Due. Previously we’ve covered Cobra Reborn, fand GI Joe reborn, and issues 1-6. And Today we will be covering the final issues of the John Ney Reiber run, issues 7-9. These were the last issues before Chuck Dixon took over for the final issues - #10 -14.

There was a Trade paperback “In the Name of Patriotism” collecting issue 1-6 but the remaining issues were not reprinted

Previously on Joe Reloaded:

A mysterious terrorist Organization Cobra has attacked the USA and stollen a deadly nerve agent named Omega Black, and the GI Joe team has been formed to combat them.

In the saudi desert, storm shadow tries to convince snake eyes to join cobra again and captures him.

After their 1st mission fighting Cobra in the streets of DC the joes are sent on training ahead of attending a military symposium on Hawaiin island. Cobra attacks the miltary assets on the island and the joe team splits up to tackle the cobra invasion.

Plot breakdown

Duke accuses Snake Eyes of being a traitor, Cobra forces secure their hold on the island of Kauai, and a member of the Joe team makes the ultimate sacrifice.

The Joe team which includes Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, Stalker, Roadblock and Duke are adrift in the ocean on a raft. They have captured the Baroness, who was dreaming of her father in prison.

Cobra forces have taken over the Hawaiian island missile base on Kauai, and the President of the United States is trying to determine if he should nuke the island to prevent any missile launches.

Hawk has been released from jail, and is weirdly taken by gun point. The President has requested to talk to the Joe team personally about Cobra, and an "old friend" of Hawk's who is holding the gun on him wants him to keep the Joe from talking.

The Baroness attacks her guards aand easlitly escapes but then cobra commander asks her to get captured again

Major Bludd meets up with Major General Cross at his home. Cross is forced to show his loyalty to Cobra under threat.

As the helicopter carrying the Joes lands, General Cross is waiting with armed troops to attack the Joes. The Baroness inside the chopper again easily kills a guard and escapes, Duke is revealed to be the traitor, a Field Marshall in Cobra ranking and leaves with cobra

With M.A.S.K. # 3 just out, expanding the Energon Universe further, and the milestone GI Joe # 25 out this month, Mark and Tim caught up with Ben Abernathy, Skybound Energon Universe Executive Editor to talk all about his role in the process that brings a Universe together!

Benjamin R. Abernathy (no relation to Clayton Abernathy) is a comics editor with almost 30 years of experience. Since getting a start at Dark Horse Comics, he has gone on to work at DC Comics , Wildstorm, Marvel Comics and Madefire. At DC Comics roles included Director – Talent Relations and Batman Group Editor. Since 2024, he has been working for Skybound Entertainment as Executive Editor, overseeing Energon Universe books and more besides.

G.I. Joe: Reloaded brought the G.I.Joe story back to its beginnings in a new continuity. Two specials (Paul Jenkins written Cobra Reborn, and GI Joe reborn the following month) launched a new continuity continued in the 14 Issues of GI Joe Reloaded. They were published in 2004 by Devil's Due in parallel to the other A Real American Hero GI Joe continuity written by Brandon Jerwa.

Talking Joe Joefest 2026 Panel : Bringing Comics to Life with guests Robert Atkins, Brian Shearer and Guy Dorian Sr

Unfortunately Larry Hama was unwell but we had a great conversation about the creative process around making G.i. joe comics.

Brian Shearer is a professional comic book artist and illustrator based in the United States. He has worked on a variety of high-profile comic book titles, including Transformers, and Doctor Who, among others. He also writes and illustrates his creator-owned graphic novels, Gunship Thunderpunch and William the Last.

We know him best for his work on GI Joe, inking SL Gallant after Gary Eskine's run. Starting with 173 then a long run 191 through to 263. He had full art duties for 2 issues, 253 featuring duke and 277 featuring Law and order and illustrated several covers.

Robert Atkins has worked as a penciler, inker and colorist within the comic industry. He studied at Savannah College of Art and Design, where he earned an Masters in Sequential Art and now teaches there himself. He is best known for his work on IDW's relaunch of GI JOE and the subsequent Snake Eyes Series,but other work includes Amazing Spider-man, Venom, Heroes for Hire, Ultimate Fantastic Four and The Savage She Hulk for Marvel comics, Legion of Superheroes for DC comics and Forgotten Realms for DDP. He creates artwork for toy packaging for various companies and brands including NERF, Marvel Legends, and Star Wars. He is the co-creator of a comic series titled Elders of the RuneStone. His more recent work includes the pencilling the Snake Hunt arc of GI JOE: A Real American Hero for IDW Publishing, Joe illustrations for Renegade Games , and Order of Battle for Sybound.

Guy Dorian Sr. is a comic book artist, toy designer, and cinematic art designer with over 30 years of experience who has worked for some of the largest mainstream companies in the world, including Marvel, DC, IDW, JusToys, 20th Century Fox, Marvel Entertainment, and Storm King Productions, as well as on several Hollywood films. You can see his work as an inker for Marvel Entertainment products all over the world in magazines, coloring and activity books, video games, wall posters, cups, hats, t-shirts, and more.

In comics, Guy has worked on titles such as The New Warriors, Marvel Comics Presents, and Night Thrasher.
