A simply excellent conversation with Catherine Walsh MAICD MAHRI who provided a range of insights regarding decision-making, the importance of your people and being willing to do what your team does. Her views on leader capabilities have changed over time and a critical learning - recognising that leadership is not about you but everyone else and accepting that real leadership is about helping others to shine irrespective of any recognition you might receive. Today’s podcast guest is Dr Victoria Herrington, Director Knowledge at the Australian Institute of Police Management (AIPM).  She describes leadership as a process of creating coalitions and developing support for ideas.  Dr Herrington defined leadership as addressing problems, about making progress and challenging the status quo.  We discussed the issue of fit for future leadership and she added the following - do we have (work for) fit for future organisations?  If you subscribe to the idea that leadership does not take place in a vacuum, her observation is profound and adds a further level of complexity to understanding this thing called leadership.

Welcome back to Talking Leadership which takes a slight detour from speaking from with Australian military leaders to exploring the leadership topic from a global perspective.  Today’s guest is Charlotte Hayes CEng MIMechE, a Major in HM Forces. My co-host, Ben Deverson, Founder, Director and Chief Organiser at Lawganised asked Charlotte to identify what she considered to be her list of key leader capabilities. These included - resilience, being authentic and self-awareness. I sensed that Charlotte holds the relationships amongst her team as important to her professionally and personally, an approach well worth emulating.

Ben also asked Charlotte too share her finals thoughts on the leadership topic which she noted as - being your authentic self, know your team and what drives them, explaining and communicating the ‘why’ of a task or decision, building resilience and demonstrating grit.
