In just two-and-a-half seasons at Leongatha (1974-75 & 1979), Tim Nuttall certainly left his mark in green & gold, playing a leading role in the Parrots' record-breaking 1979 premiership victory. A local boy, keen bike racer & late starter to footy, Nuttall began his football journey with Meeniyan-Dumbalk United (1971-73) before coming 'home' in 1974 where he played under coaches Barry Mugeli ('74) then Ross Johnson (1975). Work opportunities took him to Melbourne, where he played with Sunshine in the VFA's 2nd Division, then with Springvale, before returning to Leongatha midway through 1979. It was great timing, as coach Neville Stone's team was embarking on what would become a famous premiership, defeating Traralgon by a then-record Grand Final margin of 77 points, with Nuttall one of the best afield. The following year, again due to work commitments, Nuttall crossed to rival Traralgon and won a second consecutive premiership, where he was judged best on the ground against his former club & also won the inaugural Stan Aitken Medal.
In this fascinating chat, Nuttall reveals how he trained his mind to visualise outcomes, which proved critical in both of his Grand Final performances.

As captain-coach of our first premiership in the Latrobe Valley/Gippsland League—one of the most famous Grand Final victories in Leongatha's history—Terry Benton holds a special place in the hearts of the Parrot faithful. Some still suggest Benton is the club's greatest player and coach, such was his impact during his four years as a player with the club (1970-73). Benton won the League B&F in 1971 and the club B&F in 1972, etching his name into Parrots folklore. He had joined Leongatha after 77 VFL games with North Melbourne, where he won back-to-back night premierships (1965-66). After stints playing and coaching at Alberton League clubs Meeniyan-Dumbalk United and Foster, Benton returned to Parrot Park as non-playing coach for one final year, in 1985.

Over generations, the Salmon name has been royalty at Leongatha, and Ian 'Curly' Salmon remains one of Gippsland's greatest sportsmen. Four senior premierships with the Parrots (1970, 1977, 1979 & 1982), four best and fairest awards (1970, 1978, 1980 & 1984), a League B&F (1980) and a Stan Aitken Medal (1982) make for one of the most impressive resumes in LFNC history. Salmon also played 113 VFL games with Footscray (1970-76), coached Fish Creek to back-to-back flags (1991-92), and enjoyed a fine cricket career at Nerrena CC.

"Up the Parrots!" 

Ross Johnson played seven VFL games with Hawthorn (1971-72), winning the 1972 reserves premiership with the Hawks alongside future Legend, Michael Tuck. In 1975, after two seasons as playing coach of Coleraine in the Western Border League, Johnson was headhunted to coach Leongatha during what proved a transitional period for the Parrots. The club missed the finals in '75, but Johnson blooded several youngsters who went on to win flags in green and gold. He stood down at season's end and was replaced by Angus Hume, then coached at Glen Alvie before returning to Parrot Park during 1979 where he played in a senior premiership under Neville Stone, in one of the greatest teams in Leongatha's rich history. There were further stints at Inverloch (player and president) and Tarwin (playing-coach), before Johnson served as president of the now-defunct Alberton Football Netball League.

As surely one of Leongatha's best ever first-year recruits, WA-born Ben Harding enjoyed a remarkable debut season at the Parrots in 2025. Playing predominantly on the wing, he not only claimed the Gippsland League senior best & fairest award (Trood Award & Rodda Medal), but was a key member of the side that comfortably defeated Traralgon in the Grand Final. For Harding—who quickly became one of the most popular players amongst teammates, coaches & supporters alike—this was his first premiership win throughout his football career, which has included stints in the WAFL & the VAFA. An interesting sidenote: Ben is the nephew of West Coast Eagles' 1992 premiership-winning ruckman, Paul Harding.

One of the all-time great Parrots, Adrian Campbell came to Leongatha via Traralgon, Footscray and Melbourne. He played in the 1995, 1997 & 2001 senior premierships and in 1997 became the first Parrot to kick 100 goals in a season; in two games that year, Campbell kicked bags of 17 and a league-record 19 goals, famously topping the ton on Grand Final day. Then, during a challenging period in the early 2000s, Campbell returned to the club as coach (2007-11), where he introduced a new crop of future champions who have gone on to carry the club into its next golden era.

Former Parrots president, Don Allen, reflects on his time at Leongatha (2004-05), which coincided with several major projects, including a re-sizing of the football ground, a much-needed irrigation upgrade, and improvements to the social club, among other things.  

When the Leongatha Football Netball Club one day establishes a Hall of Fame, Gary Webster, with a resume as fine as any footballer in club history, will surely be an inaugural inductee. 'Webby' played 233 senior games (top five all-time), won four premierships (1989, '95, '97 as captain, and 2001) and two club best & fairest awards (1991, 1993), received 10 interleague guernseys, and captained the Parrots (1997-99). He also won a senior premiership at Meeniyan-Dumbalk United (1988) and played in losing Grand Finals at Leongatha in 1994 and '98 (seniors) and 2003 (reserves), meaning, between 1988-2003, seeing Webby burst through a banner on Grand Final day was a common theme in the month of September.
