Talking To Myself About Happiness

Listen Later

We’ll get to that subject line in a moment, but first some long awaited details about the venue. This Sunday, September 11th, we will be meeting in person! I’m excited, as you may have guessed. We will also be test-driving a facility that is new to us, and that has the potential to be a longer-term home for our in-person gatherings. Some details as follows:

Address:  170 Scott St (Osborne Village-ish area, but closer to Main)

Building Name: The Rainbow Resource Centre
Parking: Free, some right beside the entry we will be using, more on the adjacent streets
Accessibility: Ground level entry; all spaces fully accessible
Space for the Littles – quite possibly the best ever! They even have their own kitchen.
Which Doorway To Use  – not the front doors, but the door nearest the parking lot. We’ll put out a sign.Gathering Details: We won’t mess with this part – we’ll gather such that we can get underway at 10:45 a.m., and we’ll wrap up by noon. Any questions about those details, be in touch. There will not be “And Lunch After” online (come and hang out in person if you can; join by livestream here if you can’t). Also, we won’t have a mid-week Zoom hangout on the weeks we gather at an actual venue. More about that as things unfold.Kids Table: Our timeline was a bit too tight to have programming for our youngsters this week, but the space will be available for creative parent co-op supervision / d.i.y. Kids Table kinda stuff.
Masks and related matters: Generally speaking, we’ll continue to operate in a way that both follows the public health protocols and takes into account the particular circumstances within our community. For the time being, that means you should bring a mask and be prepared to wear it when we are mingling about at the start and end of our gathering. You can choose to wear it or not when we are seated for the gathering itself. We might adjust that on the fly in consultation with those in attendance, but let’s take that as our starting assumption for now.
About the subject line – when I’m choosing topics and preparing Talky Bits, I often feel like there are two significant guiding factors. One is “what is going on in the community / the world around the community?”. In other words, what might encourage us to continue to explore what we believe, in our current context? The second is “what do I need / want to explore?”. That’s a more personal take on things. It feels pretty great when those intersect, and they often do. That said, even when there is strong overlap, I sometimes feel like I’m incredibly privileged to get to dig into what I want to explore, while also addressing what might serve the community well. In this case, I’m starting into what I expect will be a few Sundays exploring the topic of happiness. Anybody else out there feel like that might be timely?    Anybody else out there feel like they’ve been taught that being happy is for the shallow, the “not quite sincere”, or something else along those lines?
As with most things, the pursuit of being happy can lead us well or mislead us, or be a blend of the two. And there are those who would categorically reject the pursuit of happiness as not l
