Talking Trees

In this Saturday episode of Talking Trees, we examine the findings of the European Red List of Trees, a landmark IUCN-based assessment revealing that nearly 42% of Europe’s native tree species are threatened with extinction.

We discuss:

• The major threats contributing to this crisis, including invasive species, habitat loss, poor land management, and deforestation
• Geographic trends and country-level data, showing where conservation challenges are most acute
• The critical role of ex situ conservation, such as seed banks and botanical gardens, and the alarming gap in protection for many rare species
• Why native tree diversity matters for ecosystem function, climate resilience, and cultural identity
• The need for urgent, targeted conservation action, backed by policy, science, and public engagement

This episode is a call to action—protecting Europe's trees means protecting its ecological future.

In this Tuesday episode of Talking Trees, we dive into the world of friction hitches, essential tools for climbers that provide control, safety, and flexibility during ascent and descent in tree work.

We discuss:

• How friction hitches function by gripping the rope under tension while allowing easy adjustment when unloaded
• Popular hitches like the Prusik, Blake's Hitch, Valdotain Tresse (VT), JRB, and Longhorn, and how each performs under different climbing systems (Ddrt and SRT)
• How to match hitch cord material and diameter to the main rope to ensure optimal grip and performance
• Situations where friction hitches are used, from ascending and descending to serving as rappel backups or lanyard adjusters
• The pros and cons of different knots in terms of slip resistance, tendency to bind, and ease of tying/untying

Mastering friction hitches is fundamental for safe, efficient, and adaptable climbing, whether you're a seasoned arborist or a recreational tree climber.

In this Monday episode of Talking Trees, we explore how urban trees respond to rising temperatures and what determines their heat resistance in the face of climate change and the urban heat island effect.

We discuss:

• The physiological and biochemical effects of heat on trees, including impacts on photosynthesis, respiration, and water regulation
• Methods to assess heat tolerance, from leaf-level tests to remote sensing technologies
• Why urban trees are particularly vulnerable due to limited rooting space, reflective surfaces, and compacted soils
• Strategies to enhance heat resilience: species selection based on provenance, breeding programs, and targeted fertilisation
• The critical gap in research focusing specifically on urban tree species, and the need to prioritise this area for sustainable city planning

Selecting and managing trees for heat resilience is key to maintaining urban canopy cover and the essential ecosystem services it provides.
