This past week, I got to participate in a debate at lads to leaders. Lads to leaders is a convention we go to once a year where we get to practice leadership skills such as speech, song leading, Bible reading, debate, and more! The proposition ( or topic) of this debate was “scripture teaches that life is sacred and begins at conception”. During the debate, I had to argue for both sides of the argument. In the first half of the debate I was for the proposition and in the next half of the debate, I was against it. In the debate, the first two speeches are each around 5 minutes long and these are called constructive speeches. In this time we gave our proofs and evidences for our case. Then we were given a 5 minute break to write a rebuttal against the other person’s speech. In the rebuttal we had 3 minutes to defend our own side against what the other person had said. I really enjoyed doing this and I hope to do more debates at lads in the future! My affirmative speech: 0:00 Opponent’s negative speech: 4:44 5 minute break for rebuttal preparation Opponent’s rebuttal: 9:47 My rebuttal: 11:12 NEXT DEBATE (I switched positions here) Opponent’s affirmative speech: 13:43 My negative speech: 18:45 5 minute break for rebuttal preparation My rebuttal: 22:23 Opponents rebuttal: 24:57
