On today's episode, Jana and Reata discuss the repercussions and antidote for a jealous and envious heart. They begin their conversation reflecting on the first tangible illustration in scripture of jealousy in the story of Cain and Abel. Cain let the jealousy in his heart consume and dominate his actions. This leads into discourse on how a jealous heart can negatively impact our relationship with God and others and the importance of subduing these dangerous emotions so that they do not consume/control us.
Additionally, they speak on the topic of comparison and how dwelling on what one does not possess ultimately displays a lack of faith and respect in our relationship with God, which often trickles down to our relationships with others.
Jana shares personal experiences with bouts of jealousy in relationships and how she overcame those feelings with gratitude, eliminating sources of dissatisfaction, changing her mindset, and trusting in God's plan and purpose. They end the episode with closing remarks about how peace and contentment are the outcomes of overcoming a jealous and envious heart. Reata shares a verse from proverbs stating that before destruction the heart of a person is proud but before honor there is humility.
Verses Mentioned:
Genesis 4:3-16 The Story of Cain and Abel
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

On today's episode, Jana and Reata reflect over their quarter 2 podcast series, "Wisdom" and "The Gospels" mentioning their favorite tangible takeaways that they are applying in their daily lives. They both highlight how these two studies unintentionally flowed by learning about principles/practices throughout wisdom literature and then seeing these principles lived out by Jesus in the Gospels. Jana revisits some of her favorite proverbs from the "Wisdom" series, including Proverbs 12:1, 12:16, and 12:18. While discussing these proverbs, Jana discerns the importance of managing our own emotions to others' thoughts and actions and not giving the power over to others to impact our inner peace.
Additionally, they converse about the teachings in Ecclesiastes and how every "thing" is meaningless; instead it is the people in our lives that ultimately provide meaning to our life. Reata also shares how a different seed in the "Parable of the Sower" stuck out to her while revisiting the book of Luke, which leads to a conversation about the importance of perseverance.
Scripture Mentioned:
12 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
but whoever hates correction is stupid.
16 Fools show their annoyance at once,
but the prudent overlook an insult.
18 The words of the reckless pierce like swords,
but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
LUKE 8:15
15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

Reata shares some of Mark's history, as well as some additional facts traditionally believed regarding his background. Mark 8:14-15 (NIV) The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod
14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15 “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”
