  • Attitude E4 - Toxic Attitudes

    Send us Fan Mail

In this third episode of our "Attitude" series, we dive deep into the corrosive effects of a "Toxic Attitude." It's more than just negativity—it’s a behavior that harms both the individual and those around them. From manipulation and criticism to gaslighting and rebellion, toxic attitudes can wreck relationships and spiritual growth.

We’ll explore biblical perspectives on toxic behaviors, share real-life examples, and discuss how to recognize and confront these attitudes—whether in ourselves or others. Don't miss this powerful conversation on how to overcome toxicity and nurture healthier, more positive mindsets!

    Scripture Referenced:

Proverbs 22:24-25  “Don’t be friends with people who become angry
easily. Don’t stay around quick-tempered people.” So, people who become
easily angry and quick-tempered could be considered toxic.

Romans 12:14  Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.

Matthew 5:39-41 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.

Proverbs 16:28 A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.

  • Attitude E3 - Complaining (Part 2)

    Send us Fan Mail

On today's episode of the Tangible Talks podcast, we continue our conversation on complaining in our "Attitudes" series. During the discourse we explore three sources or root causes that can frequently lead to complaining, such as lack of rest, hunger, and grief.

During the episode, Reata leads us in a study of two biblical examples that illuminate this topic. The first with Elijah in the old testament and the second with the disciples exhausted from grief in the New Testament. Join us today as we unpack the root causes of complaining and seek tangible mitigations for this toxic behavior.

    Scripture Referenced:

    1 Kings Chapters 18 & 19

1 Kings 19:6-9 All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

7 The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. 9 There he went into a cave and spent the night.

    Luke Chapter 22

45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”

  • Attitude E2 - Complaining (Part 1)

    Send us Fan Mail

On today's episode, we continue our "Attitude Series" by addressing the topic of complaining. Ever heard the phrase, "complain and remain"? Well, it's true! Complaining can trap us in the very situation we're grumbling about and stop us from moving forward and thus reaching our full potential.

In this episode, we take a look at the Israelites in the wilderness, who complained about everything from their food to their circumstances, and even God! Their attitude of complaining led to fault-finding, ingratitude, and irresponsibility, ultimately keeping them from reaching the promised land.

Join us today as we discuss the negative implications of complaining in our lives and study biblical examples to learn how God responds to complaining; ultimately seeking tangible takeaways to combat this destructive habit.

We all have moments where our attitudes slip, but it’s often easier to spot in others than in ourselves. Reflecting on personal experiences and biblical wisdom, we discuss how discontentment yields a negative mindset often followed by complaining and murmuring. Furthermore, we inquire how a negative mindset keeps you stagnant and prevents you from receiving God's full abundance.

We’ll discuss how attitudes, both positive and negative, shape our lives, and how the Bible encourages us to renew our minds and embrace a Christ-like mindset. From the wilderness journey of the Israelites to practical tips for overcoming negativity/discontentment with gratitude, this episode is packed with insight and encouragement.

  • Rest E5 - Rest in Hebrews

    Send us Fan Mail

On today’s episode, we wrap up our Rest series with a deep dive into "Rest in Hebrews"! In this episode, we explore the powerful concept of rest as presented in the book of Hebrews, and how it connects to our faith journey today.

We unpack the story of the Israelites and why they failed to enter God's promised rest in the wilderness, and how their unbelief and disobedience prevented them from experiencing the blessings of rest. But there’s good news! Hebrews encourages believers to enter God’s rest—not through striving, but through faith. This rest isn’t about earning salvation, but about walking in faith and experiencing God’s peace in our lives now, as a preview of the ultimate Sabbath rest to come.

We also talk about the spiritual nature of rest: it’s not just about physical relaxation, but about ceasing from our own work and trusting in the completed work of Jesus. We’ll explore how spiritual rest is essential for our well-being, how it helps us let go of fear, anxiety, and the need to prove ourselves, and why the rest found in Christ is a blessing.

Join us as we unpack these themes from Hebrews, reflect on the significance of the seventh day rest from Genesis, and look forward to the final rest promised to believers in Revelation.

    Verses Mentioned:

    Hebrews Chapter 3 & Hebrews Chapter 4

Revelation 14:13 13 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: ‘Blessed are the dead, those who die in the Lord from this moment on!’” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “so they can rest from their hard work, because their deeds will follow them.”

  • Rest E4 - The Rest of the Story (Part 2)

    Send us Fan Mail

In today's episode, we explore "The Rest of the Story" as we dive into Jesus’ teachings on the Sabbath by reading four examples found in the Gospels. We examine the clash between Jesus and the religious leaders over Sabbath observance, highlighting how Jesus viewed rest not as a burden, but as a gift from God. Through His actions, like healing on the Sabbath, Jesus redefined true Sabbath rest, emphasizing worship, community, and focus on what truly matters.

Additionally, we discuss how Jesus did good despite the Pharisees motives to set him up and condemn him, and converse about Jesus being the Lord of the Sabbath. This leads into further discussion about Jesus showing us that he ruled over the Sabbath instead of letting the man-made laws and traditions rule over him.

Join us as we reflect on the deeper meaning of rest and its relevance in our lives today.

    Scripture Mentioned:

Matthew 12:9-14 The Man with The Withered Hand

Matthew Chapter 9: Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man

Luke 13:11-13 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

  • Rest E3 - The Rest of the Story (Part 1)

    Send us Fan Mail

Welcome to the Tangible Talks Podcast! In today’s episode, we continue our series on "Rest" with a deep dive into the New Testament. Our title for this episode is "The Rest of the Story", and we're exploring how Jesus viewed the Sabbath and the concept of rest.

Throughout the Old Testament, we see the Israelites trying (but often failing) to "honor" the Sabbath. While the Sabbath was meant to be a sacred day of rest, by the time Jesus arrives, the religious leaders had turned it into a list of restrictive rules. This led to some major clashes between Jesus and the Pharisees, who accused Him of breaking Sabbath laws.

But Jesus brought a fresh perspective on the true meaning of Sabbath rest. He didn’t see rest as just avoiding work but as a time to focus on what really matters—like healing, community, and worship.

In this episode, we’ll look at several times Jesus healed on the Sabbath—encounters that outraged the religious leaders but revealed deeper truths about rest. We'll discuss why Jesus’ actions weren’t violations but were, in fact, demonstrations of the rest God intended for us.

We’ll also dig into key scriptures like Matthew 11:28-30, where Jesus invites us to find true rest in Him, and reflect on how this rest is a gift—a break from our busy lives, and a chance to refocus on God, not work or worldly pursuits.

Tune in as we unpack the Rest of the Story and discover how the Sabbath is more than just a day off—it’s an invitation to embrace God’s peace and purpose!

  • Rest E2 - Tracing Rest Through Scripture

    Send us Fan Mail

On today's episode, Jana and Reata recount different occurrences of rest throughout the old testament to better understand God's desire/idea of rest in our daily lives. They begin by looking at the first mentions of rest in Genesis, noting that God blesses the sabbath and declares it Holy. Additionally, they explore the idea that God rested on the seventh day and utilized the time to reflect and relish in his good works. Next, they dive into different connotations of the word "rest" by the word's appearance in the story of Noah. Reata sheds light on how the different references can provide clues and insights into God's interpretation of "rest".

Furthermore, they converse about the fact that the Israelites never entered rest with God, as a result of clinging to the old ways/thoughts; providing a tangible example of how ignoring God's commandments leads to consequences and denied abundance.

Lastly, they entertain topics such as the connection between the number 7 and the sabbath, the placement of "rest" in the 10 commandments and Reata proposes the theory that rest may be a requirement for bearing fruits of the spirits.

Join us as we trace "rest" in the Old Testament!

    Scripture Mentioned:

    Genesis Chapters 1-3, 8

    Exodus 16:28-29
Then the LORD said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep my commands and my instructions? Bear in mind that the LORD has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Everyone is to stay where they are on the seventh day; no one is to go out.”

    Hebrews 4:3
Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,

“So I declared on oath in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’”[
    a]

And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world.

  • Rest E1 - Making Rest Too Hard

    Send us Fan Mail

On today's episode, Jana and Reata embark on their new series, "Rest". Before the holidays, Jana felt led to end 2024 with a season of rest; in order to spend time with family, shift focus onto other projects, and to have independent time to study scripture. During the episode, she discloses how she felt guilty at first, but later felt affirmed in this decision after identifying a driving force to produce episodes. Reata explains how she struggled with the idea and concept of resting, and both felt they failed to truly experience rest during their 7 week hiatus from recording.

During their conversation, they reveal their experiences and takeaways from their 7 weeks of rest and divulge a list of questions they pondered during this time. Additionally, topics such as setting boundaries, practical tips for eliminating distractions, finding rest, making a home of refuge and identifying sources/things that create restlessness were explored.
