History of Tango (Podcast)
Tango was born in the late 19th century in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, emerging from a rich mix of European immigrants, Afro-descendant communities, and local criollos. It began in humble neighborhoods and crowded tenements, where rhythms like the habanera, candombe, and criollo milongas blended together.
Over time, tango moved from the outskirts to cafés, then crossed the ocean and triumphed in Paris, becoming a worldwide sensation.
With icons like Carlos Gardel, tango-song reached its golden age, and later, with Astor Piazzolla, it evolved into modern and avant-garde forms.
Today, tango is a UNESCO cultural treasure and a deep symbol of Rioplatense identity.
