In the age of sharp dichotomies, nuance is lost. Modern culture limits us to only two choices with regard to almost every matter. Liberal or conservative, Anti-immigration or pro-immigration, pro-gun or anti-gun, pro-LGBTQ or homophobic, etc. Many of us choose a path and feel forced to publicly espouse its values entirely, despite disagreeing with many of them, just to be consistent. This ultimately leads to conformity and the fear of reproach. The Quran teaches us that a true believer should take a principled stance even if you stand alone. How does the encounter between Imam al-Awzai’ and the Butcher of The Levant teach us about standing for what is right, with nuance and scrupulousness.
