From Mike Carr's forward in the AD&D 1e DMG: Is Dungeon Mastering an Art or a Science? It's an interesting question, but is it even the right Question? Also, the DMG is a "guide", not a rulebook...

I often hear folks talk about how "today is their cheat day", so they can eat whatever they want, smoke, drink, avoid exercise, etc - simply put, they are looking for an excuse not to succeed. You should reward success, not fool yourself into thinking you can succeed via cheating.

Continuing my perusal of the AD&D 1e DMG, I was surprised to find THAC0 in the DMG. I fondly remember using the Random Dungeon Generation tables to entertain myself at holiday dinners and we have a voicemail about the 5e DMG from Jason.
