It’s not every day that I jump on a plane and fly from Los Angeles to Boise, Idaho for the sole purpose of doing a live broadcast of TAXI TV. But that’s exactly what I’m doing for this week’s episode!

This week’s show is coming to you live from Matthew Vander Boegh’s humble studio in his back yard tool shed. I’m fascinated by his story, and you will be as well!

Matt is a single dad who was a college professor at Boise State and promised himself he’d leave his job when his income from music exceeded his teaching salary. Matt worked his butt off and accomplished that goal in a few short years!

He now works on his music full time, and I have no doubt that he will retire very comfortably some day – all from making music in a very basic studio in his back yard tool shed!

There’s no doubt that Dramedy has been one of the most consistently requested (and often-used) genres of Instrumental Cues of the last decade.

Dramedy was most-likely popularized by the long-running TV show, Desperate Housewives, and seemed to take on a life of its own after that. There are actually sub-genres of Dramedy now like Urban Drmeday and Latin Dramedy.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a reality TV show that doesn’t use Dramedy in a variety of ways. Sneaking around, waiting for something odd to happen, a quirky moment, or something that would cause eyebrows to raise, are all examples of when Dramedy would be applicable.

As I was fantasizing about doing a TAXI TV featuring great examples of this genre, I listened to some of TAXI member Steve Barden’s work. The first thought I had was, “These are state of the art.” Steve’s cues are lovingly crafted, and frankly, they might actually be better than they need to be!

But, I was so impressed by the quality of Steve’s work, that I decided to dedicate an entire episode of TAXI TV to playing lots and lots of his Dramedy Cues. He’s been on TAXI TV quite a bit lately, so we’re going to try hard to limit our discussion to the composition and production of these Cues.

The idea behind this episode is to have Dramedy seep into your musical soul by osmosis, so you never have to wonder what Dramedy sounds like, or how to create top-notch Dramedy Cues, again!

I love recording studios! I especially love studios with incredible histories and tons of gear.

With the advent of great, inexpensive recording gear, many of the venerable, large-format studios that have been instrumental in many of the biggest hit records have sadly gone the way of the Dodo Bird.

That’s not the case for Westlake! As a matter of fact, it’s one of a handful of yesterday’s most iconic studios that continues to thrive in today’s recording industry. On this week’s episode of TAXI TV, I get to hang out with Westlake’s CEO and Co-Owner (with partner, Steve Burdick), Al Machera.

Al is a studio junkie like myself, so every time we’re together our conversations take me back to the world I’m most comfortable in––studios with great live rooms and large-format SSL and Neve consoles. There’s a brotherhood of people who “grew up” and worked in studios like that; and in this episode of TAXI TV, we’re going to take a walk down memory lane and find out why Westlake’s numerous studios have remained viable (and booked solidly) in this day and age.

I’m hoping we’ll hear some great War Stories about some of the artists and historic records recorded at Westlake. Here’s a small sample of just some of those artists: Michael Jackson, Rihanna, Shakira, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Ne-Yo, Donna Summer, Alanis Morissette, Boston, Van Halen, Frank Ocean, Josh Groban, Quincy Jones, Dave Matthews, Kelly Clarkson, Nas, Keyshia Cole, Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, Britney Spears, Nine Inch Nails, Justin Bieber, Fifth Harmony, and many, many more! Also, a countless number of films, television shows, and commercials have been recorded at Westlake!

Pro studios at Westlake’s level have demanding training for their staff members and achieve professional results that exceed what even the most demanding artists and producers require. I plan to ask Al how some of that “pro-level juju” can be passed along to today’s home studio owners as well.
