This sermon in Matthew 10, is a Sermon for Kingdom Servants. The Sermon for Kingdom Servants lays out principles for every generation of disciples. By learning and applying these principles, Kingdom citizens will be equipped as servants for Kingdom service. They will also be equipped to train up the next generation of disciples. The Sermon for Kingdom Servants begins by stating three facts about the servants of the Kingdom in Matthew 10:1-4: they are commissioned, certified, and confirmed.

Psalm 79 is a Biblical response to God’s judgment. The survivors ask, how does one respond to God’s judgment?

Philippians 2:5-11 is considered one of the most difficult passages to understand. It is brimming with profound theological statements regarding our Savior. Many believe theology to be impractical to their life or simply academic pontification for seminarians. This anti-intellectual approach to Scripture, seems to forget that Scripture was not written to theologians but to common people to enable them to live pleasing to the Lord.

Psalm 79 is a Biblical response to God’s judgment. The background of this psalm is the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC by Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians. Following the destruction of Jerusalem, the people were taken into captivity. Both the destruction and captivity were foretold by God. He warned Israel to repent of their spiritual harlotry before it was too late. Nonetheless, false prophets mocked God and said that the city would never fall and the people would never go into captivity. Despite their assurance, God leveled judgment upon the Kingdom of Judah. This psalm is written by the survivors still living in the destroyed remnants of Jerusalem. How does one respond to God’s judgment.

Matthew reveals the King’s authority and the Kingdom citizen in Matthew 7:28-29. King Jesus’ authority is revealed in the last two verses of Matthew 7 and throughout this entire sermon. He reveals His authority as a Rabbi, the Son of God, the Lord, and the Judge.

According to Bishop J. C. Ryle, Jesus closes His sermon by turning “from false prophets to false professors, from unsound teachers to unsound hearers.” The cold hard reality that Jesus presents in these final verses of Matthew 7 is that false prophets are not the only danger facing Kingdom Citizens. Indeed, there is the danger of self-deception. As such, Jesus expounds on the theme of self-deception and the Kingdom citizen in Matthew 7:21-27.

Jesus follows up His teaching on the two ways with a warning about false prophets in Matthew 7:15-20. His rationale for such a warning is simple. Whenever the restrictive demands of a narrow way are taught, there will be false prophets who will blur the truth, distort the Gospel, and promote the benefits of the broad way. Even today, churches are filled with missionaries, evangelists, pastors, and teachers who distort the Gospel of Christ. Their pseudo-Gospel contains no Hell and requires no repentance of sin. As such, Jesus delivers a warning about false prophets and Kingdom citizens in Matthew 7:15-20.

Psalm 78 focuses upon passing on God’s Word to the next generation. Because obedience brings blessing and disobedience brings curses, the psalmist challenges the next generation to obey God’s Law and not forget God’s works.
