What you do with your lottery winnings is ultimately your business. But what a man in Michigan did with his seems unadvisable, especially given the unfortunate events that followed.

The man said he won $30,000 playing the lottery, bought a $20,000 gold chain and then had his jewelry stolen at a gas station on Detroitโ€™s west side.

Security footage was obtained from a Mobil gas station near West Warren Avenue and Grand Boulevard.

The man, who was identified as Jamal, is seen inside the store with the alleged assailants walking into the store. One is seen clearly on camera.

Later, Jamal is seen outside the store and was attacked by the men. They eventually grabbed the chain from Jamal as he struggled to get back into the gas station.

According to the report, the gas station owner said one of the assailants may have committed a similar robbery at the gas station a few months ago. Footage of that alleged robbery also was shown on the report.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to call the Detroit Police Department.

Although the $30,000 lottery score is modest compared with multiple million-dollar wins, itโ€™s a good course of action to be responsible with any winnings.

If you hit a big lottery score, you should consult an accountant, financial adviser and tax attorney.

A Michigan lawmaker also introduced a bill in the state House of Representatives to allow big lottery winners to remain anonymous.

The bill, introduced by Pat Outman (R-Six Lakes), passed the House in May and is now in front of the Senateโ€™s Regulatory Reform Committee.

Also in the news this week, a mid-Michigan man who blew nearly $1 million in lottery winnings was found dead after several tumultuous years following his 2010 score.

A second lawsuit has been filed against Daunte Wright's estate, this time alleging he assaulted and robbed a man in March, just three weeks before former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter shot and killed him during a traffic stop.

The civil complaint, filed in Hennepin County District Court by attorney Michael Padden, claims Wright was there when an accomplice shot 20-year-old Joshua Hodges on March 21 before the two robbed him of his phone, wallet and car. Padden also filed a lawsuit in May that alleges Wright shot and permanently disabled a teenager in 2019.

The Wright family is represented by national civil rights attorney Ben Crump, Chicago-based personal injury lawyer Antonio Romanucci and Twin Cities-based attorney Jeff Storms, who was part of the legal team that won a record $27 million wrongful death settlement for George Floyd's death.

The lawsuit states that around 7:05 p.m. on March 21, Wright and another person got out of a car and approached the plaintiff, Hodges, who was sitting in a 2004 Honda Civic outside a residence on Washington Avenue in north Minneapolis.

The lawsuit goes on to say the person who was with Wright opened the driver's side door and shot Hodges in the leg, striking an artery and causing "massive bleeding" and fracturing the victim's fibula. Then, Wright allegedly beat Hodges, leaving him with injuries to his face, mouth and teeth. The gunshot wound resulted in a "lengthy hospitalization," and Padden argues the incident "easily could have resulted in (Hodges's) death."

Wright and the other perpetrator then took Hodges's wallet and cellphone before Wright got in the car and drove away, the lawsuit alleges. The other perpetrator got into the vehicle he and Wright drove to the scene.

Hodges claims to have recognized Wright as one of the perpetrators because they had previously gone to school together. The complaint states shortly after Wright started approaching Hodges's car, he realized the victim recognized him and put on a mask.

The lawsuit seeks at least $50,000 in damages on counts of assault and battery, aiding and abetting, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence and theft.

This is the second lawsuit filed against the estate of Daunte Wright in as many months. Padden is representing the plaintiffs in both of those cases.

In May, the mother of 18-year-old Caleb Livingston sued Wright on allegations that he had shot Livingston in the head on May 14, 2019, outside a gas station in north Minneapolis. Court documents claim Livingston now has permanent physical and mental disabilities and relies on his mother, Jennifer LeMay, to handle his basic living needs.

Wright was not charged with any crime related to the allegations detailed in either lawsuit. Padden says no other arrests have been made related to the alleged assault against Hodges.

In both cases, Padden emphasizes Wright's criminal history, including being charged in the aggravated robbery of a woman in Osseo in 2019 and having an arrest warrant on suspicion of illegal possession of a firearm and fleeing from police on June 30, 2020.

โ€œThe sad reality is that Daunte Wright was an arch criminal, and anyone who says otherwise is not being honest," Padden told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS. "The crimes regarding Caleb Livingston, the Osseo victim six months later, and Joshua Hodges clearly represent just the tip of the iceberg.โ€

Law enforcement authorities shot and killed Winston Boogie Smith, an allegedly armed 32-year-old man, in the Uptown area of Minneapolis at 2:08 p.m. CDT on June 3, 2021. Smith was being pursued by a special U.S. Marshals Service task force that apprehends wanted fugitives as he had an active warrant out for his arrest. The arrest operation had the participation of several local police agencies in the U.S. state of Minnesota. An investigation of law enforcement conduct by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension in the days afterward said that Smith had brandished a firearm and shot at officers who attempted to arrest him. Smith was killed by the approximately twelve rounds fired by police. Law enforcement did not use body cameras or dashcams when apprehending Smith. Several protest events were held which turned into riots and looting in reaction to the incident as activists disputed the law enforcement version of events. There was no known video evidence of the June 3 encounter.

Winston Boogie Smith, Jr. resided in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He had attended Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis. As a musician, he went by the nickname Wince Me Boi. Smith was a father of two.

Smith was convicted previously of first-degree aggravated robbery related to a 2017 assault and robbery of his ex-girlfriend. He was sentenced to a 48-month prison term, but was released on parole instead of serving more time in jail, provided he did not break the law. The conviction also barred Smith from possessing a firearm.

In 2020, police in Bloomington, Minnesota, attempted to arrest Smith on several local warrants. Smith, who was in a parking lot at the Mall of America, fled in his vehicle while police gave chase on to Interstate 494 as Smith drove at high speeds in the opposite direction of traffic. Police ended the pursuit due to concerns over public safety. Smith later faced charges in Hennepin County related to the incident and had a court hearing scheduled for September 2021.

A judge issued a warrant for Smith's arrest in December 2019 for violating several terms of his parole, which had included maintaining contact with a parole officer and abiding by the law. When Smith was arrested outside a residence in White Bear Lake, officers found a loaded handgun under the driver's seat of his car. He was subsequently charged in Ramsey County court for illegally possessing a firearm. Smith pled guilty to the weapons charge in November 2020 on the day before the trial was schedule to start. Smith missed a May 19, 2021, sentencing hearing, and a new warrant in Minnesota was issued for his arrest, and he was ordered to be held without bond or bail. An internal police document included a quote from Smith that he might โ€œshoot it outโ€ if authorities tried to apprehend him.

Smith released a song in 2020 under the moniker Wince Me Boi titled, "Goodbye", that was said to foreshadow a potential prison term. He also posted videos to social media websites suggesting violence towards police.

The city of Minneapolis has finally started the process of shutting down George Floyd Square and reopening the intersection of 38th & Chicago. Some agree with this move and think it's long overdue, others not so much.
