TDN Podcast

Joe Harper joins this week's TDN Writers' Room to discuss the close of a Del Mar meet marked by a perfect safety record and record handle.

Even as the British Turf grieves a revered sovereign and, in the same person, its most cherished and indispensable servant, I hope you'll forgive me for instead reflecting on the loss, only the day before, of someone she would have loved to be typical of all her subjects: a horseman, and true countryman, who divided his time between the international bloodstock circuit and an old rectory in rural Yorkshire.

On this week's episode of Bettor Things with Joe Bianca, the host welcomes Seth Merrow, a public handicapper for the industry-leading Capital OTB channel and administrator of Equidaily, a popular racing news aggregation and handicapping site. Merrow talks about growing up a half-hour from Saratoga and the way he's seen the track change over the years, the challenges of being a public handicapper, the current state of racing journalism and more.

Kosta Hronis joined this week's TDN Writers' Room to share what the experience is like to be a co-owner in superstar Flightline and noted that there was a “great possibility” that the son of Tapit would race in 2023 rather than beginning his stallion career.

The race is not always to the swift. Pretty old news, by this stage: it's right there in Ecclesiastes and, nearly as long ago now, you could see as much when More Than Ready cut the last corner in the Kentucky Derby. He transparently didn't get home, flattening into fourth behind Fusaichi Pegasus.

Joe Bianca talks to handicapper, owner/breeder and former racetrack executive CJ Johnsen about betting, sports, music and more, then Joe lays out plays for Saratoga's Jockey Club Gold Cup and Flower Bowl, two Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” challenge races.

Mark Taylor joins this week's TDN Writers' Room to talk about the success of Taylor Made sire Not This Time and his Travers-winning son Epicenter. He also gives a preview of Taylor Made's consignment at the Keeneland September Sale.

Our sport thrives on anticipation; our business, on outcomes. But actually it can take a while to unpick one from the other—especially when even a race as storied as the GI Travers S. is not just an end in itself, but also a potential means to viability for the whole program of whoever is lucky enough to own the winner.

Aron Wellman, the President and Founder of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, joined this week's TDN Writers' Room to continue the celebration after Nest's stunning victory in the GI Alabama S.

I guess the whole point is that ours is a world apart, a sanctuary from the cares of the “real” one. But it still feels unnerving, to see a new cycle of the sales calendar open with such blithe indifference to a wider consensus that the global economy is scrabbling along the top of a precipice.
