  • Nothing Is Ours

"Nothing Is Ours" is a Dharma talk and brief guided meditation that asks the question: What if we have nothing to lose because nothing was ever truly ours to keep?

In this talk, we explore one of the Buddha's most liberating teachings: the relationship between impermanence, attachment, and our illusion of ownership.

From our possessions and relationships to our bodies and even our sense of self, everything we cherish is subject to change. But recognizing this doesn't mean that nothing matters, that we should love less, or that loss shouldn't hurt. Quite the opposite.

Drawing on the Buddha's teachings on not-self, craving, and the two arrows of suffering, we explore the difference between loving and possessing, caring and clinging, and the freedom that comes from holding life with an open hand.

I hope you'll find some benefit in this talk and that you will enjoy your time here!

  • Killing The Demons With Kindness

"Killing The Demons With Kindness" is a Dharma talk offered at Two Hands Sangha about one of the more unusual encounters in the Pāli Canon: the Buddha's confrontation with Āḷavaka, a terrifying yakkha with a taste for human sacrifices and a serious anger management problem.

When the Buddha shows up uninvited in the demon's dwelling, threats and intimidation quickly give way to some surprisingly profound questions about happiness, wisdom, generosity, and what makes a life worth living.

Drawing from the Āḷavaka Sutta (Sn 1.10) and its traditional backstory, we explore the difference between power and wisdom, the importance of patience and compassion, and the possibility of transformation even in the most unlikely beings.

It's a fun story, perfect for Halloween, and I hope you'll find some value in this wild story! Enjoy!

  • The Founder of the OG 4H Club

"The Founder of the OG 4H Club" is the annual obligatory telling of the Angulimala story we all know and love, but with a little humor and hopefully a useful way of framing it.

Angulimala was Harmless, then Harmed, then he became Harmful, before finally becoming Heedful. He was a notorious serial killer who wore a necklace of his victims' fingers and ultimately became an awakened disciple of the Buddha.

Yes it is the Buddhist redemption story, but it's also a story about cultivation, the influence of others, and our remarkable capacity for transformation and about karma.

We'll consider the consequences of our actions, the power of compassion, and what the Buddha really meant when he told a fleeing murderer, "I have stopped, Aṅgulimāla. You stop."

I love this framework for talking about Angulimala so much because I think that every one of us can identify with times in our lives where we were one of these four. And we all have the capacity to be the fourth...Heedful. Have a Happy Halloween, and enjoy!

  • The Responsibility of Gratitude

"The Responsibility of Gratitude" is a Dharma talk and brief guided meditation inspired by a powerful story shared by Dr. Russell Ledet, this Dharma talk explores an often-overlooked dimension of gratitude: the responsibility that comes with the things we value.

Drawing on the Buddha's teachings on gratitude, generosity, relationships, and impermanence, we explore how the work of caring for our homes, families, bodies, and even our meditation practice can become an expression of appreciation rather than resentment.

Life can be difficult and we can get tired. Part of gratitude can be recognizing that sometimes the responsibilities we carry are connected to the very things that make our lives meaningful.

It's not just about appreciating what we have, but appreciating the opportunity to care for it.

I hope you find this useful in your life. Enjoy!

  • The Other Deathless

"The Other Deathless" is a Dharma talk offered at Two Hands Sangha that asks "What does justice look like when compassion is part of the equation?"

In this episode, we explore the Buddhist perspective on the death penalty, from its long history in America to recent headlines that have reignited questions about punishment, public executions, and the taking of human life.

Drawing on the Buddha’s teachings on non-harming, intention, compassion, and the possibility of transformation, we examine the difficult distinction between justice and vengeance. Can we hold people accountable for terrible actions without abandoning our commitment to compassion? Can we protect society without cultivating cruelty?

Ultimately, this isn't just a conversation about the death penalty. It's about what happens in our own hearts when we decide that another human being deserves to die, and whether our response to suffering helps bring it to an end or simply creates more of it.

I hope you will find this talk useful or helpful in some way. Peace.

  • How Lucky Are We?

"How Lucky Are We?" is a Dharma talk and brief guided meditation that asks what a little illustrated skeleton have to teach us about life, death, gratitude, and happiness?

Inspired by Christian Watson's beautifully illustrated book How Lucky Am I?, this talk explores the universal wisdom found in the Buddha's teachings and in the ordinary experiences of being human.

From making peace with impermanence to letting go of expectations, cultivating compassion, and appreciating the life we actually have, we discover that these truths don't belong to any one religion or tradition. The Buddha didn't invent them. He recognized them and showed us how to put them into practice.

It could be that the most important question we can ask ourselves is simply… How lucky are we?

  • The Emancipation of The Boundless Heart

"The Emancipation of The Boundless Heart" is a Dharma talk offered at Two Hands Sangha about what it would be like to cultivate a heart without limits. Not simply a kinder or more compassionate heart, but one that no longer decides who is worthy of our care.

In this talk, we explore the Buddha's four heart practices, known as the brahmavihāras. Rather than four separate qualities, we'll consider how they work together, supporting one another as we encounter suffering, happiness, hostility, and the things we cannot control.

We explore what it means to cultivate appamāṇa, the immeasurable or boundless heart, and discover that boundlessness doesn't mean abandoning healthy boundaries or approving of harmful behavior. It means learning to recognize where our concern for others ends and then gently training the heart to reach beyond those limits.

I hope you find this one useful and enjoyable!

  • Getting To Know You

"Getting To Know You" is a Dharma talk and brief guided meditation on how you can really know someone. We ask how well do we really know the people around us? And how often do we decide who someone is based on a single moment, a first impression, or something we saw online?

In this talk, we explore AN 4.192, where the Buddha teaches that virtue, integrity, endurance, and discernment become known over time, through our actions, relationships, hardships, and conversations.

This teaching isn't just about how we see others. It's also an invitation to turn the mirror around and consider what our own actions reveal about us.

  • Let Go And Don't Know

"Let Go And Don't Know" is a Dharma talk offered at Two Hands Sangha on what the Buddha taught about uncertainty, wise attention, and knowing which questions are worth pursuing. Drawing on several suttas, we discover that wisdom isn't about having all the answers. Sometimes it's about recognizing what we don't know, resisting the urge to make something up, and learning to be comfortable with uncertainty. I hope you find it useful in some way. Enjoy!

  • Are You Dying To Know About Rebirth

"Are You Dying To Know About Rebirth" is a Dharma talk and brief guided meditation in which I share all that I don't know about rebirth, reincarnation, and rebirth linking. The truth is nobody knows a did they do they can't prove it.So in this talk we try to talk about the ideas that various traditions have, and why it really doesn't matter. One of the most beautiful things about the practice is that if we follow the teachings, this life will be great. And if there is anything else, we will have prepared well for it. Mostly, we need to be comfortable with not knowing. I hope it is helpful and not too horribly wrong...because truthfully I don't worry a lot about it. Enjoy!
