On today's podcast, we're featuring one of our truly visionary partner schools. DC Wildflower is a public charter teacher-led microschool. They operate with a small, committed staff of teacher leaders in a house they've bought and renovated in Washington, DC's Ward 7 neighborhood.
We are joined by two of DC Wildflower's educators. Ebony Marshman is a founding educator at Wildflower, and one of the school's two teacher leaders. Celia Daughtridge is a special education teacher who joined Wildflower's team part-time to recover from teacher burnout, and was quickly convinced by its vision to join the team full time.
At DC Wildflower, there is a strong commitment to the student experience without burning out its educators. As you'll hear from Ebony and Celia, they love education so much that they remain committed to NOT burning out. To do this requires a constant focus on and team commitment to educator wellness.
In this episode we discuss:
- How a teacher-led model can uplift and leverage the professional expertise of its educators.
- The ways self-management can release teachers from fear, and reestablish trust in the school environment.
- The reality that even the most well-designed school can still be pushed too far by the frenetic pace of our education system.
We hope you're as inspired by this conversation as we are by the whole DC Wildflower operation. As always, thank you for listening and enjoy the show!
