Thailand School Bus Fire Claims the Lives of 25, Including Teacher Who Died Protecting Student

On October 1, 2024, a horrific fire engulfed a double-decker school bus in Thailand, tragically killing at least 23 people, most of whom were young children and teachers. The incident occurred on the outskirts of Bangkok as the bus, carrying 45 passengers, was returning from a school trip to Uthai Thani province.
The Fire and Rescue Efforts
The fire ignited around noon after a tire burst, causing the bus to scrape against a metal barrier and igniting the petrol tank. Although firefighters extinguished the blaze within an hour, rescuers couldn't immediately board the bus for fear of an explosion.
Sixteen children and three teachers were rescued from the inferno and rushed to the hospital. One seven-year-old girl suffered severe burns to her face, mouth, and eyes, with doctors working tirelessly to save her sight. The driver initially fled the scene but later turned himself in to the police.
Teacher's Heroic Act
Heartbreakingly, one of the deceased, Teacher Kanokwan Sripong, was found embracing a young student, shielding the child with her own body in her final moments. This act of selflessness has touched hearts around the world and highlighted the dedication of teachers in the face of unimaginable tragedy.
Investigation and Aftermath
Authorities are investigating the incident, with initial charges of reckless driving causing deaths and injuries filed against the driver. While the driver claimed he fled to find a fire extinguisher, police are investigating whether negligence on the part of the bus company also played a role. The bus reportedly carried 11 natural gas canisters despite only having a permit for six, raising further safety concerns.
The tragedy has spurred public outrage over the lack of safety measures on school buses and the high rate of traffic fatalities in Thailand. The government has pledged to cover the victims' medical expenses and provide compensation to their families.
