In this episode, Fran condenses her own TA experience into 3 R’s: Research, Rehearse and Refer. Research: getting to know the subject matter of the class and ways of teaching it effectively. Rehearse: imagining teaching scenarios and strategizing classroom performance. Refer: tapping into personal and institutional resources to address issues and concerns beyond your own expertise.
In this episode, Nolan shares his philosophy of teaching the Asian “Civ” classes (introductory classes to the history of Asian countries) at Columbia, and Fran follows up with tips for engaging non-majors in the classroom. Nolan originally presented his inspiring speech at a virtual teaching workshop at the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia.
