This week, we will study Mark 10. This concludes the special session in which Jesus taught his disciples how to prepare for the Cross. The session I mentioned runs from Mark 8:22 to Mark 10:52. About half of the chapter deals with the disciples themselves, and the remainder deals with issues important to discipleship but told through the lens of others who interacted with Jesus.
The Pharisees come and argue with him over the subject of divorce. Parents take their children so that Jesus can bless them. A rich man asks about eternal life, and a blind man asks for sight.
Mark chapter 10 provides essential teachings about what it means to follow Jesus, especially concerning living here and now. Topics include marriage, children, how to relate to riches, and the rewards and costs of following Christ.
To top it off, the healing of a second blind man is reported in Mark 10:46 to 52, with the healing of the first occurring at the beginning of the session in Mark 8:22 to 26.
This session clearly and beautifully illustrates the cost and results of following Jesus. Together, these lessons prepare Jesus's followers, whether the disciples of 2000 years ago or the disciples of the 21st century, for the challenges accompanying the call to discipleship.
I will conclude the introduction to this week's lesson by saying: The Son of man humbled Himself to become the servant of God. He submitted to shame and self-sacrifice, even to death, to give those who believe in Him freedom, life, and a place in His kingdom. He gave His life as a ransom for many. This should be enough to make those who are continually seeking to be first and striving for supremacy ashamed of their course.
