Romans 13:6–7 teaches that Christians should render what is due to civil authorities as part of faithful obedience to God. Because rulers serve under God's providence, believers are to pay taxes, revenue, and respect, giving honor where honor is owed. This is not mere civic courtesy but an expression of submission to God's order, a testimony that Christ's people live responsibly, peaceably, and conscientiously in the world under his sovereign rule.

Because Christ strengthens you, you must learn to live content in every condition. 1. For contentment to grow, we must see the sovereign supply that God gives. 2. For contentment to grow, we must submit to the sacred school that God teaches. 3. For contentment to be, we must serve by the sufficient strength of God Himself. Philippians 4:10-13

One theme of Christ's teaching in Luke is this: the Old Testament Scriptures teach that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer. In Luke 24:45–46, Christ makes this point again before ascending to heaven. But why was this necessary? And where exactly in our Old Testament Scriptures was this foretold? From a bruised heel to two dead brothers to a servant who suffers silently and alone, this is the theme to which we turn in our study in Luke.
