  • The Destination of our Pilgrimage: A Homily for the 2nd Sunday of Lent

    A homily for the 2nd Sunday of Lent (A) preached at St. Mary Mother of God Roman Catholic Church in Sylva, NC, on March 8, 2020.

    “Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, ‘Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.’ When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, ‘Rise, and do not be afraid.’ And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone” (Mt 17:1–8).

    “You know the time; it is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed; the night is advanced, the day is at hand. Let us then throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light” (Rom 13:11-12).

  • Life & Death; Jesus & the Church: A homily for the 32nd Sunday of Ordinary Time (C)

    Homily preached by Deacon Matthew Newsome on Sunday, November 10, 2019, at St. Mary Mother of God Roman Catholic Church in Sylva, NC.

    Jesus said to them,

    "The children of this age marry and remarry;
    but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age
    and to the resurrection of the dead
    neither marry nor are given in marriage.
    They can no longer die,
    for they are like angels;
    and they are the children of God
    because they are the ones who will rise.
    That the dead will rise
    even Moses made known in the passage about the bush,
    when he called out 'Lord, '
    the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob;
    and he is not God of the dead, but of the living,
    for to him all are alive."

    (Lk 20:34-38)

  • Saints & Heroes: A Homily for the Solemnity of All Saints

    A homily for the Solemnity of All Saints preached at the WCU Catholic Campus Ministry chapel on November 1, 2019.

    "See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. Yet so we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope based on him makes himself pure, as he is pure" (1 Jn 3:1-3).

  • Bearing Hardship for the Gospel: A Homily for the 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time (C)

    A homily for the 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time (C), preached at St. Mary Mother of God Roman Catholic Church on Sunday, October 6, 2019.

    "I remind you, to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice

    but rather of power and love and self-control. So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake; but bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God" (1 Tim 1:6-8).

  • Envy & Humility: A Homily for the 22nd Sunday of Ordinary Time

    A homily for the 22nd Sunday of Ordinary Time preached at St. Mary Mother of God Roman Catholic Church in Sylva, NC, on September 1, 2019.

    "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet,

    do not recline at table in the place of honor.
    A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him,
    and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say,
    'Give your place to this man,'
    and then you would proceed with embarrassment
    to take the lowest place.
    Rather, when you are invited,
    go and take the lowest place
    so that when the host comes to you he may say,
    'My friend, move up to a higher position.'
    Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table.
    For every one who exalts himself will be humbled,
    but the one who humbles himself will be exalted." (Lk 14:8-11).
