Dr. Tony Novosel (Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences) is a historian and educator at the University of Pittsburgh and has dedicated decades to the study of the Northern Ireland conflict and particularly loyalism and political loyalism.

Tony discusses the IRA split of 1969, how the conflict should be characterized, the UVF, Gusty's Spence's influence as well as that of Ian Paisely.

I asked Tony about whether the violence that broke out was inevitable, the common misconceptions surrounding the subject, teaching in the age of ChapGPT and much more.
