Every day is an opportunity to make new resolutions to become a better person and leader. In this episode, Kyle and I talk about the mindset and surefire habits spoken in the best business books that have helped form who we are, how we behave, and how we effectively show up in our lives and our orbit.

(00:02:54) Make your damn bed. There's a reason why parents have drilled early in our heads why making the bed every single day is a MUST. When you get older, you realize that the value of having accomplished one thing first thing in the morning builds momentum throughout the day. 

(00:09:30) The more you can make some things a habit, the less brain power it takes to process what's going on. Doing so removes decision-making fatigue and allows you to divert it to the more important things you do. 

(00:22:27) Habits & consistency create safety and control that we know what's going to happen. Ask yourself: are you doing the daily routines that set you and your team for success?

(00:32:35) It's so much easier to start with a habit you already have and add rather than starting entirely from scratch.-Every day is an excellent day to make new resolutions to become a better person and leader. Start with a habit you already have and pair it with another; this technique will help you stick to it and easily establish repeatable routines for success!

(00:46:46) If you want to be a better leader, you need to paint a picture of success and what that means for you. If you are unsure who you truly want to be, look at the people you respect and admire. They have blazed the path that you want to follow. Observe their character, behavior, and habits? What are the common things? Break them down and see how you can model and implement them in your own life.

(00:58:18) It doesn't matter how little those habits are; if they're aligned with the person you want to be. Do you feel frustrated making slow progress? Remember: what matters is that you are moving forward and becoming better than who you were before. It's the little things that will make a huge difference, not only in your world but also in everyone else's world around you.

It can be pleasurable to take credit for every bit of success, yet it takes immense humility and courage to take responsibility when things don't work out and fail. In this episode, Kyle Probert and I share our take on what it means to take "Extreme Ownership". We share our insights from the impactful book by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin that makes us rethink our strategies, taking a cue from Navy SEAL combat stories and applying them in our own lives and businesses. 

Key points covered in this episode:

(00:03:26) Extreme ownership is about asking yourself, "Where was I at cause?" Reflect on how your action can mitigate what didn't work; however, don't use it as a blame mechanism and beat yourself up. It should be about growth and failing forward.

(00:07:54) It's super important to reflect on the good results to be able to replicate them. Recognize or give a pat on the back when something's gone right and understand what went well to let people know what worked and not the mindset of "I just got lucky".

(00:08:35) Every little thing plays a part in the success or the unsuccess. What ends up as a failed attempt is always the best, learning to do things differently the next time.

(00:10:14) Feedback can be seen as a reward. Build human connections with your team members and maximize meetings by truly communicating to them regardless of whether you give positive or negative feedback.

(00:18:17) If you've got a team member who keeps getting things wrong, is it the team member's fault? Or is it your fault? The ownership piece ensures you've given them enough information, tools and resources to set them up for success. Don't make many assumptions about what they should or shouldn't be able to do. 

(00:41:38) Knowing that people understand your message is your responsibility.  We have to think about how we're communicating if we want the message received and received in a way that gets the result that we're ultimately trying to get.

(01:00:12) Sometimes people outgrow where they are and go on to do an absolutely amazing job somewhere else. It's our job as leaders to recognize that and, to some extent, encourage it.
