This week, Teamsters Local 1932's Hispanic Caucus was able to sit down with a group of students from Oak Hills High School and their teacher to discuss a project now showcased virtually by the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
The three high school students hope to bring attention to the groundbreaking Lopez vs. Seccombe case, which took place in the 1940s and desegregated public parks and pools in San Bernardino.
As the founding member of the Brown Berets, Dr. David Sanchez is a legend in the social justice movement. In the 1960s and 70s, he was heavily involved in the Chicano civil rights and political movements, helping to lead the famous walkouts at East LA High. Years later, Dr. Sanchez is still organizing and is a published author of several works.
The Teamsters 1932 Hispanic Caucus is honored to interview Dr. Sanchez. Enjoy this conversation on his legacy and his organizing strategies.
Carlos Montes is a nationally respected leader and organizer in the Chicano movement. He was a co-founder of the Brown Berets, a Chicano working-class organization in the United States in the late 1960s and 1970s. Montes was one of the leaders of the ELA Chicano Blowouts, a series of walkouts of East Los Angeles high schools to protest against racism and inequality in Los Angeles-area high schools.
The Teamsters 1932 Hispanic Caucus is honored to interview Carlos Montes in a wide-ranging discussion on his legacy and what organizing means to him.
The Teamsters Local 1932 Hispanic Caucus looks back at the walkouts organized by Chicano students in East LA in 1968. How did they start? What lessons can we learn from these inspiring groups of organizers? All of this answered, with additional discussion on the 2006 HBO film about the Walkouts.
