The US Supreme Court took up a case this week that could have some far-reaching impacts on the future of content on the Internet. The case, Gonzalez vs. Google, covers whether or not Google is liable for content that was uploaded to YouTube that later led to deaths in a terrorist attack. The case has garnered a significant amount of media attention as it applies to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. This rule is the one that allows you to post a comment on a video or blog post and not have the hosting compnay be held liable for the content. Section 230 has been the target of groups that say that Internet sites are both somehow siliencing commentors and that they should be held responsible for the content of their non-paid contributors. Cisco is looking to embrace the growing field of IoT with some new announcements around rugged switches and access points as well as a new dashboard designed to address the needs of operations teams. The new Cisco IoT dashboard allows existing IT teams to manage Cisco IoT offerings, such as the IE3100 Rugged Series Switch and the IW9165 Series Access Point. The goal is to provide more integration between these teams to help create synergy as well as provide enhanced security monitoring through the new Cyber Vision IoT security platform.  

Cisco has also announced several new initiatives aimed at providing sustainability in enterprise IT. Leveraging platforms such as Webex to reduce the carbon footprint of in-person meetings is just the start. Partner companies like Pure Storage are working to reduce power consumption in devices as well as providing upgrade paths to reduce the amount of e-waste for end-of-life hardware. The goal is helping IT departments adopt sustainable methods and integrate those into their workflows for the future while also streamlining operations and reducing CapEx and OpEx budgets.

Pat Gelsinger isn't done cutting just yet. This week brought news of two big changes for Intel. The first was news that Intel will no longer be developing networking switches. You may recall that Intel picked up startup Barefoot Networks back in 2019 and was integrating the Tofino ASIC in a number of products. Intel's offerings had been facing stiff competition from Nvidia, Broadcom, and others and the move comes as Intel is trying to restructure after a massive loss in Q4 of 2022. Intel has said that the IPUs are going to be a focus area now. Also announced was the end of the Pathfinder for RISC-V program. The announcement came as a surprise to those in the program, only having been disclosed by a notice on the project's webpage. Intel had been extending an olive branch to the RISC-V community to try and encourage development on the platform that Intel could leverage in their own offerings, such as allowing the code to run on FPGAs. The US Department of Justice has joined with 8 US states to take on Google's ad platform. In a filing this week they announced the suit claiming that Google's dominant position in the market affords them the ability to monopolize and eliminate their competition. Per Merick Garland, US Attorney General, Google controls the tech used to display ads, the tools used to buy that ad space, and the ad exchange that matches advertisers to publishers. The government wants Google to divest their ad management business from the rest of the company. This could be an issue for the tech giant as a reported 80% of their revenue comes from digital ads. The enterprise angle here invovles what Google might be forced to do if they have to sell off the cash cow and how that could affect their service offerings, especially those that are free or insanely cheap thanks to being ad-supported.

If you were curious as to when Intel would launch their fourth generation Xeon processors you can satisfy that curiosity. Intel's long-rumored Sapphire Rapids architecture is now official as of this week. The biggest takeaways from the official coverage are the inclusion of accelerators on the CPU die to help increase performance for specific workloads such as SSL, 5G, and networking built around DPDK. This features comes alongside Intel On Demand, a service that allows you to purchase a CPU now and unlock accelerators in the future for a fee. There's even discussion of support for Optane and CXL! Just in time for the holidays, Okta got a lump of coal in the form of a breach of their GitHub repository for souce code. The intrusion appears to have been targeted at the Workforce Identity Cloud solution and an automated tool was able to access and dump the code. GitHub declined to offer details on how the code was accessed but assured users that customer data was not impacted and Auth0 products were not affected. This attack comes on the heels of Okta being breached by Lapsus earlier in 2022. Tom, what do you think about this latest SNAFU for Okta?
