At the Connect conference held by Meta on Wednesday, Meta unveiled the Quest 3, the highly anticipated successor to the widely popular Quest 2 mixed reality headset. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, had initially announced the Quest 3 earlier this year, shortly before Apple's unveiling of its Vision Pro headset. While some specifications were revealed at the time, Meta provided additional details and showcased the device's remarkable features at the conference. Powerful Hardware and 'Passthrough' Capability The Quest 3 is equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset and boasts 8GB of RAM, ensuring smooth and efficient performance. One standout feature of the new headset is the inclusion of 'passthrough', which enables users to see their real-world surroundings while wearing the headset. By simply double-tapping on any part of the device, users can transition from a fully immersive virtual experience to an augmented reality view, where virtual elements are overlaid on top of their actual environment. Enhanced Visuals and Audio Meta has made significant improvements to the optics of the Quest 3. The introduction of the 'pancake' lens optical stack not only enhances image clarity and resolution but also reduces the overall profile of the headset. The Quest 3 features a 4k+ 'Infinite Display' with a resolution of 2064 × 2208 per eye, offering a 30 percent improvement in visual resolution compared to its predecessor. Meta claims the device delivers an impressive 25 pixels per degree and 1,218 pixels per inch, providing the best resolution across the entire Quest lineup. Additionally, the audio capabilities of the Quest 3 have been enhanced. The headset offers a 40 percent increase in audio range compared to the Quest 2, ensuring a more immersive and engaging auditory experience. Furthermore, Meta focused on comfort, implementing a thinner design and improving weight distribution for maximum user comfort during extended use. Price and Availability The Quest 3 is priced at $499.99 for the 128GB version and $649.99 for the 512GB model. Both models are currently available for pre-order through the official Meta Quest website, with shipping expected to commence on October 10, 2023. In a significant move, Google has unveiled its earthquake alert system for Android devices tailored for the Indian demographic. The innovative system taps into the smartphone's inherent sensors, transforming them into makeshift seismometers capable of detecting ground tremors. Harnessing Smartphone Capabilities for Earthquake Detection The Google earthquake alert system for Android utilizes accelerometers found in phones to recognize seismic movements. Collaborating closely with India's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Seismology Center (NSC), Google has ensured that these alerts cater to areas expected to face the earthquake's impact. Additionally, to cater to the diverse linguistic landscape of India, Google earthquake alerts are available in multiple Indian languages that Android supports. Understanding Google's Dual Alert System Google disseminates two distinct alert types to its users: "Be Aware" and "Take Action". The "Be Aware" notifications are designated for those who undergo MMI 3 & 4 tremors during a seismic activity of magnitude 4.5 or higher. These alerts, when displayed, respect the phone's "Do Not Disturb" or silent configurations, ensuring no audible disturbance. Conversely, for tremors rated at MMI 5+ during an earthquake scaling 4.5 or above, Google forwards alerts that override the phone's earthquake alert system settings. This ensures that even if the phone is on "Do Not Disturb", it will emit a loud alarm. Alongside the warning, Google provides invaluable guidance on immediate steps, like seeking shelter beneath sturdy furniture, to safeguard oneself. Google Earthquake Alert's Underlying Technology and Efficiency One might wonder, how does Google's earthquake alert system function? The method involves numerous Android phones concurrently recording seismic activity within a given region. Google earthquake alerts AI processes this consolidated data, enabling the system to transmit warnings often moments before the tremors are felt. How to Enable Google Earthquake Alerts on Your Android Phone in India For those eager to harness this feature, ensuring their phone runs on Android 5 or a subsequent version is crucial. Additionally, maintaining an active Wi-Fi or cellular data connection is mandatory. To activate the Google earthquake alert settings, one can navigate to Settings > Safety & Emergency > Earthquake Alerts. A secondary pathway to enable these alerts is through Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts. Broader Safety Initiatives by Google in India Beyond earthquakes, Google has been proactive in offering technologically advanced safety solutions for Indians. The tech giant has been disseminating AI-driven flood alerts throughout India. This initiative took root in 2018, starting as a pilot in Patna, Bihar's capital. Recognizing its success and the broader Google earthquake alert system India benefits, the company scaled up the flood alerts to encompass the entirety of India by 2020. Wrap Up Google's commitment to leveraging technology for safety, as evidenced by its earthquake and flood alert systems, promises a safer and more informed future for users across India. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are Apple's latest premium smartphones. However, several users have encountered a significant hurdle - the iPhone 15 Pro overheating issue. The company is yet to officially respond, but the potential reason has been uncovered and a software remedy is anticipated. Unraveling the Cause Users have frequently reported iPhone 15 Pro overheating problems, especially during the charging process. The crux of these heating dilemmas hasn’t been fully elucidated, but notable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo offers some insights. The iPhone 15 Pro overheating cause, according to Kuo, could be traced back to a potential compromise in the device’s thermal system design. There were initial speculations that the A17 Pro chip fabricated by TSMC on its 3nm node was the underlying culprit, but this seems to be a misdirection. The iPhone 15 Pro models, being lighter than their predecessors, have a reduced heat dissipation area, making them prone to heating. Additionally, the titanium frame on these models is suboptimal for heat dissipation, exacerbating the iPhone 15 Pro overheating problems. User Experiences The heating is predominantly observed while charging the phones or after brief usage. There have been instances where an iPhone 15 Pro Max ceased charging due to overheating, even when left idle. Another user reported excessive heat generation during light activities like browsing social media. Anticipated Solutions Though official acknowledgment from Apple is still pending, the iPhone 15 Pro overheating fix is expected to be addressed through iPhone 15 Pro software updates. However, an effective solution might necessitate a reduction in the processor’s performance. iPhone 15 Pro overheating solutions are crucial as unresolved issues may have repercussions on the shipment of the iPhone 15 Pro models. Wrap Up The iPhone 15 Pro models are testimony to Apple’s pursuit of excellence in the technological realm, but the iPhone 15 Pro overheating issue remains a substantial concern for users. Until formal acknowledgment and solutions are provided by Apple, the user community is left to ponder and seek temporary remedies.
