Richard Hosgood from Votiro was this week’s guest on Technado with Don Pezet. It was a busy week at Technado with Don Pezet. First, Don was out, but ITProTV Edutainer Adam Gordon filled in. Douglas Murray from Valtix joined to talk cloud security, including the new concerns being raised as cloud-native computing adoption increases. Next, industrial control systems expert Dr. Guillermo Francia from the University of West Florida Center for Cybersecurity came on to help the team understand the Colonial Pipeline malware attack. He also discussed best practices for securing critical infrastructure. Finally, in the news, the guys covered an annoying Windows Defender bug in Windows 10, Microsoft shelving Windows 10X, and a Netflix IT executive’s sentencing for taking kickbacks from vendors.

Georgetown University faculty member and world-renowned cybersecurity expert Chuck Brooks was this week’s guest, where he talked about a range of topics from the rise of AI to the US cyber defense systems. In Science and Tech News, he shared his Forbes article on the key cybersecurity trends to know for 2021. Then, in the news, the guys started the shocking revelation that 1.5 million people still pay for AOL! In other news, they looked at an Argentinian buying Google’s domain for cheap, a new browser that aims to charge a subscription fee, warnings against upgrading to Ubuntu 21.04, and an Experian data leak. Finally, in Deja News, Don reluctantly admitted Peter was right to assume defense attorneys would line up to appeal convictions that relied on Cellebrite’s phone crackers.

DevGraph’s Ravi Duddukuru joined the team this week to talk about the future of developer tools. Then, in Science and Tech News, he discussed the reasons behind the growth of cloud spending and reasons for migration. In the news, the guys covered Ubuntu’s release of 21.04, the conspiracy theories surrounding the Pentagon’s dormant IP addresses, ransomware gangs shorting their victims’ stocks, the hacking of Cellebrite’s iPhone cracker, and QNAP removing a backdoor. Finally, in Deja News, they reviewed how the University of Minnesota’s apology was received by the Linux Foundation.

This week was the big one celebrating the 200th episode of Technado with Don Pezet. It started with NetworkChuck sharing his origin story and playing the game “Linux Distro or Band.” There were some giveaways and shoutouts from special guests sprinkled in for good measure, as well as the unveiling of the all new Technado website at http://techna.do. In the news, Chuck stuck around to discuss Apple’s latest product launches, plans to secure the US power grid, and the Linux Foundation banning a university for submitting buggy code. Cisco Network Consultant, speaker, and podcaster Utkarsh Srivastava joined Technado this week to share his vast knowledge of things like machine learning and artificial intelligence. In the ‘Buzzword Breakdown’ segment, he talked about his recent blog post outlining the ethics of AI. Then, in the news, the crew discussed Microsoft’ use of boiling liquid to cool servers, the Microsoft acquisition of Nuance, and the causes of Facebook’s massive data leak. In ‘Behind Bars,’ they looked at the arrest of a suspect who wanted to blow up an AWS data center. Then, in “Deja News,' they dug deeper into the php.net GitHub incident. Finally, in ‘WTF,’ they confirmed that COVID-19 vaccines won’t get you connected to the Internet. Bummer.

Christopher “CRob” Robinson, who leads Red Hat’s Product Security Program Management, was this week’s guest on Technado. After filling the team in on how the IBM acquisition impacted Red Hat and the future of Ted Hat Insights, he talked about how branded vulnerabilities get under his skin in ’What Grinds my Gears.” In the news, the guys discussed Arm’s new Armv9 architecture, the ruling in the case between Oracle and Google, Microsoft killing Cortana on mobile, Apple knowingly selling MacBooks with defective displays, and the Azure DNS issue that took Microsoft offline. Finally, in ‘Who Got Pwned,’ they discussed a whistleblower report the shed new light on Ubiquiti’s breach.

Jason Gooley from Cisco joined the podcast this week and shared the story of how he got into the industry. In ‘What Grinds my Gears,’ he talked about the lack of diversity in tech and shared some of the steps Cisco is taking to address the issue. Finally, he told the crew about his work with the David Ellefson Youth Music Foundation. Then, in the news, the team covered the launch of Plan 9 from Bell Labs, Cisco’s moved to network as a service with Cisco Plus, a big iPhone vulnerability, OpenSSL fixing a high-severity flaw, and PHP’s Git Server being hacked. They closed with ‘Behind Bars,’ looking at the sentence for a disgruntled IT admin who wiped Microsoft user accounts at his old company.

Andrew Useckas, one of the founders and the current CTO/CISO from ThreatX joined Technado this week to talk about how their web application protection and DDoS mitigation platform has evolved over the past year. Then, in ‘What Grinds my Gears,’ he shared his frustration with layer 8 security and ineffective end-user security training. In the news, the guys discussed a new DuoModo Thunderbolt 3 expansion box from Sonnet, the release of CentOS replacement distro Rocky Linux, Intel adopting SiFive’s new RISC-V cores, Intel’s newest CPU microcode update, and hacks affecting Peloton exercise machines. To wrap things up, they laughed at the revelation that ransomware payments may be deductible in “That Makes no Sense.”

Ferdinand Soto joined Technado this week to talk about his journey from the military to a job as a Security Systems Engineer at Cisco. In the new segment, ‘Origin Story,’ he shared details about Cisco’s VTIP program for veterans. Then, in the news, the guys discussed Windows Terminal coming to Windows 10, the Victoria University of Wellington accidentally wiping all their desktop PCs, the staggering 3 billion spoofed emails sent daily, a researcher hiding ZIP and MP# files in a PNG on Twitter, and Acer being hit with a $50 million ransomware attack. Then, in ‘Behind Bars,’ they covered the sentencing of a Russian man in a Tesla extortion plot.
